towbar coding

Featured Replies

hi, just had a witter detachable towbar fitted over the weekend and rang a couple of dealerships up this morning to ask how much a re-coding would be for it to be recognised in the mfd only for a silence on the other end of the phone and to be told that we have not been asked for that before we have an hourly charge of £79 so bring it in and we will look at it,anyone know someone in west yorks, pontefract who could do the coding and know what they are doing.

check out the briskoda members who have VCDS by looking in the relevant section under Diagnostics and VCDS on the home page of Briskoda. Some one will normally do it for beer money....

It's literally a 3 click task for someone with VCDS!

Many stealers don't seem very IT familiar!

It's a little bit more than that... but not much

Hi Merlinman ,

I ordered my Yeti with Factory fitted Towbar Prep. and then paid for my dealer to fit a removeable

westfalia tow ball etc. They made a good job of intalling the hitch assembly etc. but in spite of me

requesting that they recode the Yeti to "know" that the trailer was there - in fact it turnes out they didn't.

When I tried coupling up the trailer for the first time yesterday the reverse parking sensors immediately

went berserk telling me I was reversing into a brick wall as soon as I switched the ignition on .

OK I could cancel that by switching off the parking sensor switch on the dashboard - but of course they came

back on again every time I engaged reverse or restarted the Yeti. Also there is no indication on the Maxidot

that I have the trailer coupled up - either on the vehicle symbol or on the turn indicators.

I think you had the same problem. Can you tell me what should be appearing on the Maxidot display etc.

as I am taking the vehicle (complete with Trailer coupled !) back to the dealer this week to hopefully sort out

the coding correctly. What should I be looking for the check that this is done correctly ?.

Many thanks Merlinman

Hi again!

This is what I get - bear in mind I only have single electrics for my tow ball cycle rack.

  • On the Bolero screen you should have a picture of a trailer when you start up.
  • The reversing sensors should disconnect.
  • Your car fog light should be disabled when you have the trailer hitched.
  • The fog light (and reversing light(s) should activate on the trailer.
  • On my set up there is no audible warning when the indicators are used, but if they are not working I get a 'bulb out' warning on the Maxidot.

HTH, I'm sure others will relate their experiences?

Very poor show on the whole by a number of Skoda dealers who have fitted Skoda tow bars to folks' Yetis on here! I'm aware of at least 4 of us who've needed to get the coding sorted - GRRR!

Merlin's description is correct!

Many thanks Merlinman and Llanigraham

I too only have a goods trailer with the older style 12N 7 pin socket and cable. (I don't have a caravan).

The dealer fitted Westfalia Tow bar installation provided the more modern 13 pin socket on the Yeti ( as it should do).

The dealer also provided me a good quality 13 pin to 7 pin adaptor so I can connect up to my trailer using my existing

7 core trailer cable. All that was fine - except that they omitted to alter the Yeti coding to show the trailer presence

and turn off the rear parking sensors when trailer is there.

Hopefully this will be rectified this week - I requested they contacted Skoda UK to get proper instructions on how

to carry out the recoding.

Thanks again John

The problem is they aren't bothering to read their instruction manual, where all the details are specified. Thankfully I've got a good dealer!!

Mind you you do have to have the correct type of electrical connection set up - i.e one that is wired into the fuse box, not one with a 7 way relay stuck at the back !!

Many thanks Merlinman and Llanigraham

These are the instructions for coding...

These are from the vehicle specific kit from www.rightconnections.co.uk - their site is worth a look at as they have lots of useful information.

Just had Listers Skoda, Coventry code my Westfalia towing electrics at £47.98. I shall, of course be asking the company that fitted the tow bar etc. to pay for that since I expect the job to be done properly and not to hae an additional cost.

Can you tell me what should be appearing on the Maxidot display etc.

Got my bike carrier out and connected it up.

This is what it looks like:

edit:

...also if you lock the car with the trailer electrically connected and then unplug it, the alarm goes off.
