312's and 16" OEM Alloys

Featured Replies

Sure I can't be the first person to consider this, but with the tightness of fitting 312's under 16" alloys has anyone ever seen an alloy buckle or get a dent in it which could impact the calipers? The thought of hitting a pothole and the alloy jamming hard onto the caliper on one side worries me sufficiently to put me off 312's without putting on 17" alloys first.

I used to run my 312's with the oem wheels and there completely fine. Not exactly the smoothest of roads in north Yorkshire either!

Some Octavia 1 vRS have 16" spiders or 5-spokes + 312s as standard.

One thing to consider is the fact that with the caliper so close to the wheel, a stone is more likely to get trapped between the two.

I did see a thread a while ago, where this had happened to somebody. It basically scored the wheel, which then because of the stresses involved, proceeded to seperate in two....It looked like a perfect machine cut.

There's no "tightness" at all with 312s and 16" wheels; there's loads of room mun! They certainly fill the wheel more, but there's still plenty of clearance. My Alfa 145 QV was a different kettle of fish though: It ran biggish brakes and 15" wheels, and you used to have to fit low-profile weights, otherwise the calipers would knock them off the first time the wheels rotated. The clearance between wheel and caliper was about 6mm!

Well, I'm exaggerating slightly, of course, but I don't think anyone else has had any issues running 312s and 16" wheels, so I'm not sure you need to be be too worried about it. Go for it. :)

Will keep a lookout for a set, was just curious if anyone had seen it. I remember my old 147 had one wheel that rather spectacularly buckled, with calipers as close as the above when they turned they would have locked on and odds are I'd have had rather a nasty encounter with something fairly solid.

That was with standard brakes tho, so not caused by the 312's. Not heard of any issues with them ybh

Those are my rims and my brakes :o

I've run my 312's under 16"ers (both originals and Spiders) for over 2 years not and not had a single problem.

While the clearance is "tight" it must be 5mm+ between the rim and caliper, and if your wheel is dented or buckled by that kind of margin you'd have bigger fish to fry than worrying about ur brake calipers!

Indeed they are!

I understand under normal operation you wouldn't have your wheel dented etc by that amount and carry on driving, but if for instance you did have a bit of a drama and damaged a wheel the worry would be that it would lock up and you'd end up in a even bigger off.

Anyway, glad to hear that no-one has had any problems, thanks for all the contributions thus far.

Cheers

Patrick

I Have um and standard wheels and all is well. I did actually Have A buckled front wheel but it never touched the caliper at all
