pimp my rear lights

Featured Replies

those of you that read my rantings usually in capitols, (until i was told it was shouting) will know i pimped the interior of my 05 elegance with nice results, (see pictures in that topic)

so you may know that i moaned about the rear lights or rather the lack of illumination on side lights...and asked the question are the face lifted lights any different or top and bottom double filaments.....

well they aint !

so the pimping continues

i purchased two new bulb holders, double pins and opposite pin bayonet fitting.

i know the superb uses double offset and staggered pins but i will get to that latter.

the new bulb holders are approx 20 mm in length with wires already attached and slightly wider than the bulb base

i removed the rear lamps off of the car

i removed the top bulb 12volt 21 watt

i removed the bottom bulb 12volt 21w/4w and put them in the spares box, neither to be re used

i then used a snap on rotary bur fitted in a high speed drill to grind out the top bulb holder fittings on the pcb to take the new holders

i drilled two 3mm holes into the lamp holder hole on the pcb to take the two wires on the bulb holders

i inserted the new holders, pushed in so the base is flush fitting and wires poking through the drilled holes

i then soldered both sides of the new bulb holder to the pcb

the wires were then routed behind the pcb and soldered to metal feeds for the side light and the brake light

now the bulbs, they shouldnt fit , :wonder:

i purchased four 12volt 21w/5w bulbs ,(brighter) opposite pins and staggered , NOT offset and staggered factory fit 12v 21w/4w

i couldnt find the exact fit in higher wattage so the new ones were the only option

i had to file off one of the bayonet pins on each bulb( the top one closest to the glass)

the bulb holder was crimped slightly so the one pinned bulb didnt loose contact :|

i marked the pcb and the bulbs with a paint pen marker so fitting could not be 180 degrees out

(otherwise if you are ham fisted enough you could have 21w side lights !!) :giggle:

i refitted the lamps to the car a tried out.. they look good B) they are very neat B) they dont affect any other lights B) they are legal and have been checked by the vehicle inspectorate :D and give a much bigger side light area top and bottom,so safer. B)

here are the pictures although they may not be in perfect order

LIGHTS018.jpg

LIGHTS019.jpg

as you can see from the pics, its a neat and easy job, the top double filament bulb protrudes a little bit more but not enough to cause any issues at all and the best bit...

it took a couple of hours and eight quid, BARGAIN !!

the pics of the lights on are just the side lights, the camera has a very powerful flash that has distorted the image a bit, the brake and fog lights work exactly as before, no bulb failure warnings either.

what do you think?

Looks great..... Good job indeed.

May i suggest my LED upgrade?

My link

They give a very very nice red light compared to the normal halogen bulbs. :)

my word !

thats going for it !

but you still only have the lower side lights compared to my mod, it looks pricey did it cost more than 8 quid??

because thats all i wanted to lavish on mine lol

(old saying, skoda drivers are too tight to.....)

i too wanted to use the leds but i asked a question on here about a month back and one of the regulars advised against using them, and said it could have invalidated insurance ? so i got a bit concerned and wimped out !!

have you got any other mods to look at?

are there dlr lights that can be fitted into the bumper lower grills?

if i fitted leds to the front sides would i need to do the same sort of things that you did?,would 2x front leds sides bring on bulb warning?

i know the standard sides look yellow compared next to the f/f zenons headlamps

i need to modify something.... but what!

Looks great.I like to see you pimping superb.

I do the same thing with mine sup.I will steal some of your ideas. :D

I would like to see more pimping superb in future. You rely do awsome job,pls continue.

Ps Sorry for my bad english. ;)

Just wondering Cown, how much did that conversion cost you? I know you had a lot of trial and error first, but the actual final job?

Cheers,

Rob

Strongman,

Would you be interested in doing a conversion like yours for me if I sent you over the light fittings? We could work out a price for the job + postage, parts etc.

Cheers,

Rob

I'll be honest and say i dont have a clue. I just want proper quality and i dont mind paying for that. :)

I like that. Don't know that I would have the balls to drill my bulb holders, but it does look good :)

What is the impact on the bulb failure warning system? I'm guessing you would just have to lose 2/3 rear bulbs before it issued a warning now? Not a huge problem.

hi there

i agree, it looks the biz, liking it more and more

i havent encountered any faults/issues with bulb failure system, the only time it came on was when i disconnected the connector with the car running.

i have a possible customer in ireland who wants me to convert his holder/pcb also, early days at the mo though.

i dont mind taking on a few modifications

i might be starting a something of a skoda illumination movement ! lol
