I understand 215 tyres will fit on the standard wheels(6.5inch width)

I'd have thought they'd fit on the rims OK. Whether it'd be a good idea or not, I'm not so sure. You'd be bending the sidewalls in a bit, and the 45 profile standard tyres are a bit on the skinny side as they are (both in terms of looks and comfort), so even skinnier ones might be too much of a compromise...

The extra 10mm will not make a noticeable difference..

Besides, it will put more strain on the tyre walls.

My suggestion would be to look at getting the very best 205/45 16 you can find for your type of driving and wallet...

The Michelin Exalto (as used on Clio Cup) is superb, grippy and lets go in a nice predictable way, but they are soft and don't last too long.

My standard fit Bridgestones have been superb and lasted very well, but not very grippy.

I am about to replace all mine with Pirelli P-Zero Neros - about half way between the two.

You can choose between very grippy or long lasting. Very rarely do you get both. Also, you get what you pay for....

The 45 refers to the percentage of ther sidewall length compared to the tyre tread width (so it's length is 45% 0f 205). So 215/40 would be the closest you would get to standard.
