turbo boom! after 2-3 months?

Featured Replies

hey,

So I had my turbo replaced as it decided to explode and cut off all exhaust gases.

now two - three months down the line I was driving along (30mph.. not being too mean) and it decided to go pop! with a lot of black smoke (that filled the cabin and scared the crap out of me!)

Rac came to pick me up and he was a knowledgeable guy and realised that the pressure from the turbo was making its way into the crank case.

He said that its most likely the wastegate valve has got 'stuck' open and releasing the gas into the crankcase, which would make sense as there was a silly amount of pressure coming out of the crankcase breather.

Now the question I want to ask is:

After getting my turbo replaced by a fantastic garage that I have been going to for a long time and I trust alot, I presume that its not normal for it to go after 2-3 months/3000-6000 miles (cant remember!). RAC told me that there is a warranty on all parts fitted up to a year (now bearing in mind its 2-3 months) I should get a new turbo/valve/other for all free, along with labour and towing the car to the garage.

It wouldn't be such a problem but I depend on my car for my job and am loosing money and cannot afford to rent a car.

I need a car to work, they say its going to have to be assessed by themselves, taken to skoda etc, I need a car etc

Please tell me what you think I should do, and where I stand.

Thanks

If you have crazy crankcase pressure, then the it's likely the exhaust side has exploded and blocked the CAT.

Was exhaust checked for debris when the previous turbo went bang? Where both oil lines to and from turbo replaced (should be on invoice.)

Warranty for previous repair should cover you, but I would be asking some serious questions at the garage.

@OP: Not doubting your analysis, but Ive had a similar problem with loads of black smoke that turned out to be a boost pipe. When my turbo blew, there was a loud whistle, and loads of blue/white smoke. Of course you've experienced a turbo blowing before, so you know more than most people, just though I'd throw that out there.

Sad times! Hope you get it fixed dude. :(

I phoned up the garage today and they doubt its the turbo as it's black smoke coming from engine bay rather than exhaust, so this might be the problem?..

I will enquire about what work was done after I find out what went wrong!

Im pretty sure it wasnt just a boost pipe to be honest.. but cheers
