bad misfire

Featured Replies

I have a bad misfire, the engine runs in 3 cilinders, and judders like hell, smells like hell alot of unburned fuel.

No checkengine light in the dash, nothing, went to dealeship and after 2 hours of scratching behind the neck and VAG COM testing the verdict was: inginition module broken,it seems they are not very sure, and I don't trust them.

They said they checked the coils, injectors, wires, body throtle...everything.

I arrived home, and check the coli pack, unmount them...and WTF one of the coils (no 2) is blown, has 2 cracks. It took me less than 5 min to figure.

My question is:

When a coil is blown ,isn't that very easy to see on VAG COM ?a message like "misfire on cyl 2" ??

My biggest concern is both are broken coil and ignition module.

It'll be the coil pack. There is a VAG coilpack recall at the moment so go back to the dealer, & get all 4 replaced for free!

mine are old type 1.8T and not included in the recall....allready been at the dealership

Well, when I checked the thread preview, my immediate reaction was "bad coilpack and/or spark plug".

If you have vagcom, you can monitor misfires in measuring blocks 14, 15 and 16 iirc. With it being the old type ignition system though, you will have a module screwed to the airbox lid, and it may be this which has failed. Try a new coilpack and see what it runs like. It could just be the cracks are causing it to short out on the engine block.

I just changed the cracked coil, and the engine is running the same. :(

The only option left is to change the module.

I have to choose between 2 german brands for the electronic module. BERU and HUCO

BERU is 35% more expensive than HUCO ,and I am wondering is it worthing?

Beru is an OEM brand, might be worth going for that one.

After heavy researching I went for the cheap HUCO,many owners who bought HUCO ignition modules have no problem at all.

And besides that this is the VAG list of cars with OEM Huco ignition modules
