remote locking problems

Hi to all,

Ihave a 55 plate estate 1.9 tdi and am experiencing probs with the key fobs. The car will only lock or un-lock if i hold the key over the windscreen, and will not work more than a foot from the car. I have replaced the batteries,(twice for luck), gone through the re-set procedure in the handbook and also one i found on an earlier post on this site. It's starting to be annoying now....Am i being blonde ?
