Help identifying leaky hose

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've recently had a new turbo fitted after the old one blew. When the mechanic gave the car back he advised me that it had a whistling sound at high revs caused by a slightly leaking intercooler pipe. I've found this to be true, it seems to only kick in when accelerating hard over 2000rpm (it kinda sounds cool though, like the car is supercharged :D). I've had the undertray off and been under the car to try finding the pipe he means, and I think it is the elbow pipe that is attached on one side to the bottom of the intercooler but can't tell if it is split or leaking. There is a ton of crud around it though, but was told this is normal by another mechanic when I pointed this out (when the car was up on ramps trying to figure out why the turbo was screaming, before it was replaced). I was thinking it might be the pipe further up and not really accessible. I couldn't see it so well but I had a feel and it felt pretty fresh and I couldn't feel any cracks or splits.

Does it sound like the small elbow pipe or one further up nearer the turbo? Because I wouldn't feel comfortable replacing that one myself.

take it to a garage with a smoke machine and they will blow smoke through the pipes and see if any air is escaping anywhere, prob cost ya a fiver :)
