Performance carbon fibre air box, but which one is the best?

Featured Replies

Ok, the time has come to start on some minor mods. First mod would be to allow my car to breath better so I would like to buy a carbon fibre air box. The only thing is do some work better for a Vrs than others? I want to eventually also get a better flowing exhaust for it and a stage 1 remap. I really like the look of the BMC air box but does anyone on here know if they perform good? or is there better filters out there? Will it make much more of a difference compared to a pannel filter in hp or not much? If anyone can give me any tips or advice let me know thanks.

Filters make no noticeable difference in power, youd be best off just buying a panel filter for £40-£50. As for exhausts there is no restrictions on the standard exhaust I.e you will see no benefit by changing the exhaust, other than aesthetics.

No noticeable difference? Surely if you free up some more air and have an aftermarket exhaust fitted to free up more gas flow should make some difference? :wonder:

Vrs Shark do you drive a Mk2 Octavia vRS TFSI?

Intakes/filters make a big difference on the TFSI vRS as the standard one isn't brilliant, the top rated ones are ITG, Evoms and the Forge twintake. Have a search on here and also mk5golfgti.co.uk for reviews on different intakes.

I drive a MK2 vRS TFSI. I had a look at the air intakes from these companies you mentioned and they look very good quality. The only thing that's puting me off those is the price! :o I don't supose a cheaper direct airflow intake that looks similar from Halfords would do the job would it? :wonder:

Pre-made kits are not always the best fit as sometimes they get a bit generic! For that newer engine you might find a good specific kit (but will cost)...or you could do what I did which make up your own as Green Cotton do lots of bits (enclosed filters, bends, adaptors. Don't just pay money for carbon fibre!!! A good system will improve any engine as it allows the engine to draw in more cold dense air which is better for combustion!!!

My fully sealed cold air intake system (CAI) cost me a bit of time and about £240 to build...but much better quality and fit than off the shelf systems for my car for the same price!!!! B)

That's very nicely done there mate! Out of interest how much more HP do you gain from this set up on the picture? B) This is the kind of set up I want for my mk2 vRS B)

No idea...never had it on a Rolling road......but talking to idependant pros...should be getting a good 10% more just on the filter.....certainly feels like it!!!....much less restrictive tubing (I've almost doubled the x-sectional diameter of everything up to the throttle unit) and it pulls much better......mind you i also have fitted NGK Iridium tipped spark plugs, Remus higher flow stainless backbox, Mobil one engine oil, Millers gearbox oil, Shell Vpower fuel only gets used!!!

Some people will argue the point that it will do sod all especially to a nat asp engine like mine (I've found this out) and as I've no RR proof.....how about this???

This lot are very well respected and make stuff for Ford........they boost a nat asp engine from 118BHP to 140BHP just by replacing the panel filter (not a custom CAI kit!!) a new intake pipe between the engine and the airbox, high flow cat, new exhaust manifold, new high flow exhaust, remap, two new sensors!!.......No change to the spark plugs! no change to the pipe which directs air into the airbox, and no specifics on Shell Vpower!!!!

So with a TSFI engine these sort of changes combined with a remap to fine tune it specifically will really make it fly!!!! B)

I've been looking on the internet for any info on induction kits and after looking at loads of them I think I've found one I like. It's a K&N Typhoon Induction kit that comes with a heat shield. It also has a dino test graph of an Audi A3 with the same engine as mine with this kit fitted. The Audi is stock and K&N claims it gained about 18 something HP! :oB) If this is true then it's not bad for £225. If you want to see the dino figures look on K&N filters. Let me know what you think.

I've seen the filter you mentioned, I like it  I was originaly looking for an enclosed filter with the direct cold feed pipe. Too be honest I don't really know what is better or what is worse in this market! I mean, is there a difference between a budget filter for say £50 compared to a £300 version? :wonder: I can't imagine there being a big difference other than pay for the name. Please tell me if i'm wrong about that. :) Anyway, yes I like what i've seen and it looks much easier to install too, do you know what the price is for it? I can't see it anywhere on their website.

Don't know the price..look on Demon Tweeks etc......A standard Green Cotton replacement panel filter is the first upgrade but this K&N kit remakes the OEM airbox so it performs better (less restrisctions) and they include a better airbox to engine pipe! Plus it is fully enclosed and engineered for that engine...so win, win!! B)

Mate, you should be a salesman! I'm going to check it out right now on Demon Tweeks and find out the cost. Cheers
