Getting the right exposure in tricky lighting situations

Featured Replies

So, having visited GTi International at Bruntingthorpe on Sunday, I was faced with one of my trickiest lighting situations to date

It was bright sunshine for the presentation of the quarter mile awards, shooting at a darkish subject in the foreground, but with very strong backlighting

I don't use a light meter, so was hoping that the camera's built in metering was up to the job

Your comments are welcome, but I'd say the exposure is just about right

For those of you who are interested, the vital statistics are......

F6.3, 1/250th sec, ISO400, shot at 250mm on a Nikon D5000 with a Sigma 18-250mm zoom

Because of the strong light coming in from all over the shop, you've lost a bit of contrast - a quick s-curve should bring the punch back.

I'm pretty sure that's Amber Max(Price) or something, I've seen her before somewhere.

I think your hands might have been shaking slightly? :p

Pretty girl there.

Was it shot through your windscreen or side window, there are reflections from the glass which has reduced contrast and given it a slightly green cast.

Here is my edit FWIW. If you wish me to remove it, I will.

I'm not 100% sure that Brimma was being serious Scuff!

Your effort does indeed enhance a very good subject though. ;-)

Is this one of those tit shift photographs I have read about

You know me too well John :)

It was indeed not meant for a serious critique, but having said that Scuff's processed picture is a significant improvement

thats quite a wide aperture

Why has she got a hand with sausage fingers?

I'm sure that most people never notice her hands!

And despite the proposition, no flash was used. Photo taken incognito B)
