Which Tyres

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I have a fabia mk1 and currently got 17" tt competition alloys on it with 195 40 17 tyres.

Im stuck to which size of tyre to go for as i would like them to be a bit wider as not to keen on the stretch look and catch the wheels on potholes. Also would like them to fill the arch more as looks like the car is on stilts. I cant lower the car much as where I live is pothole crazy and already ripped the belly plate off a few times.

Any ideas would be great.

Cheers

Fabia MKI should NOT be running that size as the RC is way to big and will be throwing the speedo out!!!! On 16" rims tyre size is 215mm/40%....215/40 R16...so 17" rims should be 225mm/30% . B)

Eek, i forgot how much TT comp's are not my cup of Tea.

To fill the arch would involve a higher profile tyre perhaps 195/50/17 but then you're getting skinnier tyres so perhaps 225/55/17's but the bigger the sidewall the bigger the rolling diameter and the higher the car will ride... i think the best middle ground is probs just a 205 or 215/45/17 so a similar width but more sidewall

you need a 40 profile on 17`s on a fabia. So 215/40/17 would work best

The standard tyre size for a mk1 Fabia vRS is 205/45/16. You can use a tyre calculator like this to see the effect of different tyre sizes, but for a 17" rim either 195/40/17, 205/40/17 or 215/40/17 should be OK.

Ran 205/40/17 on my comps :thumbup:B)

205/40/17 look the best. Look at my signature...

Yep 205/40 is the best size for 17 inch wheels. It gives the closest outside diameter to the standard 16" size.

cool thanks, going to go with 205/40/17.

Now the expensive part of buying them.

I presume that Skoda adjusted the VRS gearbox and speedo to work with a higher RC than the rest of the Fabia range as the other MKI Fabias the biggest sizes were 185/60/R14 side wall depth = 111mm, and 195/50/R15 sidewall depth = 97.5(98.5mm required), both give an RC of 1760mm!

The logical size up to keep the same RC would be 205/40/R16 swd = 82mm, or 215/40/R16 RC = 1765 swd = 85mm (86mm required, better), and to go 17" rim would be 215/35/R17 swd = 75.25mm (73.5mm required)

BUT.....Skoda fitted to the VRS Fabia MKI 205/45/R16 RC = 1800mm swd = 92.25mm!!! So a bigger RC and deeper sidewall!!

So a 17" rim to keep the same RC would logically be 215/35/R17 but swd = 75.25, and we require 80mm!! So 215/40/R17 swd = 86mm, 205/40/R17 swd = 82mm!!!! so this is the nearest as RC = 1820mm

To recap...to keep 17" RC on a VRS as per OEM 16" then a 205/40/R17 tyre

to keep 17" RC on a non VRS as per OEM 14" or 15" then a 215/35/R17 tyre
