Avg MPG on computer v real world MPG

Featured Replies

As you can see from the figures in my signature I'm getting mpg in low 40's in my '07 2.0 litre diesel Scout. I reset the average on the computer every fill up & always get a recording in the low to mid 50's.

Doing a rough calculation I'm more inclined to the lower figure which is disappointing. Most of my driving is motorway & I'm not too heavy on the gas. I'm a bit disappointed as I was getting 50mpg+ real-world out of my last 2.0 diesel (Rover via BMW) in what I think was a heavier car.

Looking at other 2.0 Octavias on spritmonitor I'm not doing too bad.

Does anyone else see the same sort of variance between the trip & the real MPG? Is there any fix or calibration?

On board computer on my 2005 Fabia VRS gives all wonderful MPG results, which gives great satisfaction.

However in the real physical world the reality is a tankful of fuel to the next tankful is a whole new ball game, 45miles mpg or 10miles per litre.

The trip computer can be corrected using VCDS

I have probably simply been fortunate but the VW trip computer in the Galaxy was "dead on" ditto for the one in the 1.6CR Tavia, within a couple of 5 max error and often not even 1% out

This will Do well enough for me

When you're comparing an Octavia Scout against a Rover 75 don't forget the Scout has raised suspension and four wheel drive, neither of which are ideal for good fuel consumption.

+1 on that. My Fabia claims to be doing over 60mpg when the reality is just over 50mpg

The "accuracy" of the trip computer can be very variable (car to car rather than trip to trip). The computer can be anywhere from +/-1% (effectively about 0.4 to 0.5mpg) to 20% better than actuality IME. As noted above, if you've got an optomistic computer, it can be corrected with VCDS.

Real World figures I get ~45mpg on my juicy commute (11 miles from cold, several assertive accelerates, about a mile of peak-torque hillclimb at one end), and ~55 on a run, where I will get the engine to stay hot for hours, cruise at 60<cough>mph, and overtake as required.

I don't check it very often but the comp mpg on my TFSI has always been very close to the brim to brim figure when I have tested it.

The fuel computer on my PD vRS was virtually bob on compared to calculating it, whilst my FL CR vRS fuel computer is about 5% opimistic.

Much the same as I experience with my Scout, computer regularly shows upper 40s or low 50s mpg but calculated on tank to tank fill is never more than low 40s. Not bad for 4x4 & with prices going ever higher, glad I'm not still driving a petrol Subaru Outback.

Each time I fill up I calculate the brim to brim fuel consumption and record the computer mpg before resetting it for the next tankful. The computers on my current 1.8TSI Octavia and previous 1.9TDI Octavia were both , on average, 5% optimistic compared with the brim to brim figures.

Calibration is easy B)

I just subtract 2mpg from the computer figure in the 1.8TSI; with the 1.9TDI I subtracted 3mpg. - It's near enough :D

I have always found that the computer is closer to the brim-to-brim if the fuel is burnt on 1 or 2 long trips rather than 2 weeks of short commuter hops.

+1

Manual calculations using brim to brim ranges from 35 to 42 MPG on my Scout depending on the length of the journey.

OBC regularly shows late 40's early 50's

Not a scout but my 140CR Elegance trip computer shows an average mpg of 51-52 ish but when I calculate it from how much I am putting in the tank I have averaged 49.4mpg over 12000 miles. The best I have achieved has been 55.8 and the worst 45.0 which considering my old Laguna managed 41.9 mpg over 88000 miles is not too bad.

My Trip is about 1MPG optimistic which is good enough as far as i am concerned.

Thanks for the responses. I'll look into getting it re-jigged via VCDS. I'd like to have it right or at least closer.

I've done a 280 round trip today mainly on motorway/dual carriageway & got an avg of 60.3mpg with a high of 61.1 on the computer. I was taking it very easy - no more than 65mph. I guess that will equate to around 53mpg. Good to know it's do-able.

My old Fabia vrs was pretty much bob on every-time. The Octavia is some what optimistic at 8+ more than I actually get. I just know that and aim to get 60mpg over the tank. As you can see my real figures are averaging 51

My 1.6 tdi real life average 55 mpg and on meter it's 56ish.

Long relaxed motorway driving on meter have shown upto 72.9 mpg
