Type R vs a Skoda

Featured Replies

Firstly, this isn’t a mine’s faster than yours thread – well maybe a bit. However, I would like to know your opinions on something. Before I start, can I ask that people assume two things?

1. I’m not making things up.

2. The other party was trying to get round me.

There’s a VBH lookalike in Scarborough who drives a new shape Civic Type R. She is one of the most aggressive, short tempered drivers I have ever seen. On a regular basis we are heading out to work in a morning and our paths cross a few times each month. Normally I let her go and exhibit her bullish antics and don’t get involved. Some of the moves she pulls whilst trying to get to work are both death defying and breathtaking in their stupidity. If she was a bloke I’d call her a wa*@er, but I don’t know if there’s a female equivalent?

Anyway, most of our battling ground in the morning is the A64 near Scarborough in a NSL, so we’re not talking urban antics, more the wide clear roads of North Yorkshire. It so happened that this morning I had the pleasure of her company behind me and she was letting me know that 30mph through Scarborough in a 30mph zone was unacceptable. I could tell this as I couldn’t the bonnet of her car in my mirror. As we entered the NSL I eased up to 60 mph, but again this wasn’t enough as again she was quite close to my rear bumper. We slowed down for the roundabout at Morrisons and had to stop due to cars being there. Again, this annoyed her quite a lot. We set off quite sedately at first, but then there’s a short stretch of dual carriageway, say 100-150 metres. She saw this as an opportunity to go round the annoying Skoda, but found that for some reason, it was pulling gradually away on the inside lane whilst she sat in the outside lane. Seeing as we weren’t on a private road, we didn’t exceed the 60mph limit as this would have been illegal….

However, here’s the reason for my rambling thread. I looked up the facts and figures for the Type R and found that it has a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. In no way do I imagine that my humble Skoda can do that. So, how do manufacturers get these impressive figures? I have a mate who’s owned an 02 plate Civic Type R and currently has a 99 plate Integra Type R. He freely admits that on our spirited drives, my vRS is faster in a straight line than both – corners are another matter though. It would appear from my dabblings with the new shape Type R that again a remap is enough to hold off the might of another Honda. All three cars are in theory quicker than mine, but clearly aren't. What’s going on?

The new type r are alot heavier than the mk2 and only have 1bhp more i believe.

Unless they are in the vtec range they are hopeless and that dont kick in until 7k.

As u say a good remap will make u as quick as a type r more extras and u will leave them for dead

They have no torque ,so have to redline to get some speed so in gear times are not as good. Was in a new sti ( saloon) yesterday that was at the midlands meet which was fast but had to scream to 6000 revs to get power , awesome traction etc but again no torque

And if she's a **** driver then no doubt she is a **** racer and missed a gear change or changed at the wrong time etc etc. Best bet is try not to get too involved, easy to say I know but when old bill are waiting around the corner and your doing 100mph, ah hem I mean '60mph' then you'll be the car in front getting caught and potentially being banned. Let her crack on, she'll eventually crash or get caught then who's laughing. There is always a quicker car out there, vRS mapped IMO is not far off a Type-R. Wait till she comes up against an M3, then the M3 gets done by a Zonda etc etc! Women eh :p

Perhaps its because of the short gear ratios of the 1st few gears plus its difficult applying the full power down at v low speeds. I think CTR's and the likes only need 2 gears to get to 60, I know when I test drove the new civic (the 1.8 version) 1st gear went to 47mph the 2nd went ~70 odd. Only need 2 gears for normal driving

And if she's a **** driver then no doubt she is a **** racer

I think that'll be the reason.

Stick a real driver in a Micra and an average driver in a VRS and the Micra will probably win on any track.

Also if she's anything like SWMBO they car will never have been serviced, the oil never checked and the tyres will be under-inflated. So the 200hp CTR won't be making anything like the power it should. It'll be running on supermarket 95RON which I doubt the rice rocket will like very much.

I used to be regularly passed by a woman in a Clio who drove in the most incredibly aggressive manner. She's bound to be dead by now along with the people she probably hit

 love that short streach of crawler lane* (NOT duel carriageway), few years back a bunch of chavs got overtaken in their body kitted fiesta by a JCB fast trac with a full trailer

Agree with the others, vtec's are flat as a fart till around 6.5k, amost like they have massive turbo lag. Bet the woman has never gone past 5k in it :giggle:

*please note crawler lanes have a 60 limit seen a few cars being pulled doin around 75 on the hill

If she was a bloke I’d call her a wa*@er, but I don’t know if there’s a female equivalent?

How about a "flicker"?

How about a "flicker"?

 Hadn't thought of that.

As for the other points about my lady friend, they all make sense. I guess unless I was in the car with her then I'd not know if she was driving it correctly or not.

However, it still amazes me that I can out drag my mate's ITR and his old CTR considering their book times. It still happens when we've swapped cars too. I love to drive the ITR and sometimes wonder if I could live with a vtec on a daily basis, but usually come back to the decision that for a family car, turbo is the way to go.

Mid range torque will be far superior on the vRS.

I had a similar 'game' with a new shape Civic, again no speed limits were exceeded but the outcome of the over take attempted was highly amusing eventually resulting in Civic owner giving up the manoeuvre.......don't think he was expecting a hearse with 240bhp spoiling his fun!

All depends how the figures are done?

Offical figures for mine are 8.4sec to 60 yet i did 6.98 sec on the 1/4 mile at inters last weekend.

I did here that VAG calculate the figures with a full tank of fuel and a couple of passengers....no doubt the jap brigade do it with an empty tank, no spare wheel etc to look more attractive to the chav boy racers who i regularly see and think they are better than everyone else. B)

A bold claim, but I like it :giggle:

That is exactly how it works. VAG's are done in full road spec, Full tank of fuel etc.

Jap cars have a minimum of fuel, partially stripped interior etc, to make it quicker.

Something to do with EU regs...

I have owned a 2003 Civic Type R, and have had a Fabia Rs (DSG) as a rental car for 6 weeks when I was waiting for my new Superb. I can say the Fabia didn't stand a change to the Type R. Mostly because of the wheight. The power in the Type R is outstanding when the Vtec engage. But! It takes a good driver to make use of the power, high revs and correct gear changes. If you fail with that, I would say the Rs easy gets ahead and wins... And in this particular case, with the newer Type R, it's even more likely the Rs goes away with the victory...

Ive driven a couple of newer type r's and unless there you ring there neck they have no power, i would imagine a remapped vrs would hold a standard newer shape type r at bay,

That stretch of duel carrageway is also up hill over railway bridge so the vrs's torque will play a factor

One day the poor sod local ambulance crew will be shovelling up her remains into a body bag. Stupid bint!

Type R's arent really all there made out to be.

They dont handle all that well and the vtec means you have to redline them in every gear to get the 190 odd bhp they have working.

Are sure about that lol...?

Of course speaking of the Type R in general, some are better than others, and many of the newer models are heavy, which as everyone knows, is the biggest dampener on performance. I agree that the power in the vRS is more useable in alot of everyday situations, and yes you have to work the Vtec engines, but you really would struggle to beat them for pound to pound performance. I have just sold my 96 spec Teg DC2 Type R, and it was quite simply one of the best handling cars i've ever driven... Not to mention addictive :)

Now that my priorities have changed, I've had to move on. I love my vRS, it's surprisingly quick in a straight line, lovely to drive and has more than enough space. I must admit a do miss my Honda, but it's a totally different type of car - And really not suitable right now.

Slightly back on topic, it wouldn't surprise me that a vRS would catch the Type R off guard, especially if it was remapped. They are both great cars, and to be honest, if I could afford to run both, I'd go and buy another DC2 tomorrow.

When I first got my RS I went to the 'ring with a bunch of mates. One of them had a totally standard '02 CTR....

So we both had totally standard '02 cars with similar stats, and decided to do a side-by-side 70mph to Vmax run on a section of derestricted Autobahn!

The CTR had the initial jump on me, as he broke into his VTEC powerband, but it was very short lived. As soon as the RS spooled up in 5th I just roared off to about 145mph and he couldn't touch me.

The Honda may have had 17bhp more, but the Skoda has 39Nm more torque, and a sexy torque curve to match! Turbo FTW!

The Skoda actually took second place overall in the willy waving contest though. I managed 150mph on the clocks before I bottled it, the Evo VIII hit a face melting 160mph! Kids.....

People keep banging on about this rag the nuts out of it. That's the whole fun of it. My vRS ran out of puff at 5k, i've got a whole 3.4k rpm to play with. Plus the noise. Torque is for lazy drivers

I Jan i tried the following

Clio 197

Leon FR (mk2)

Octavia vRS (mk2)

Fabia vRS Mk2

Astra VXR

Corsa VXR

Leon Cupra R (mk1)

EP3 Civic Type R

FN2 Civic Type R

The EP3 was the only one that put a smile on my face. It feels like your driving a racing car. You can give it stick without worrying it goes to break down. The engines are bomb proof provided the oil doesn't get low.

While I agree in principle with the above, 99% of drivers need a day to day practical car, with the vRS you get this - but it also ticks the fun factor box, when you get some little squirt trying your patience, imho of course. ;)
