New Fabis vRS noise

Featured Replies

My brand new Fabia vRS makes a noise like someone's blowing across the top of a beer bottle (OK any bottle)i.e. mid-pitch wind noise with a trace of flutter. It's speed related, not rpm related, and appears to be coming from around the back of the driver's footwell. It's audible at 25mph and irritating from 50mph upwards. The dealer's had it in and confirmed the noise but says (1) they can't locate the source, (2) there's no safety issue so do I really mind, and (3) they have a new Monte Carlo that makes the same noise. I test drove another vRS and a 1.2 DSG before ordering the car and they didn't make this noise. To be fair, the dealer is happy to have the car back in for a week (!!) to find the source and fix it and I'm taking it in on Tuesday. To short-circuit the process, has anyone experienced something similar? I'd be very grateful for any info that I can pass back to them.

Of course I'll report progress and hopefully the solution on this forum.

Dealer will drive it for a week and use is as their run-about to find the noise though... mine has no noise I can think of, although not driven it for 5 days so might have forgotten :)

what sort of road were you driving on. i noticed on my ibiza and the VRs that driving on concrete roads at 30ish mph, the wheels make a noise similar to the one you are describing?

Any road surface, any speed. It's definitely coming from the offside only (passenger can't really hear it) so it's unlikely to be tyre noise. Anyway, the noise level varies only with the speed of the car and nothing else.

Could this be wind noise? If so, it may be caused by a small panel gap. Yonks ago I had this on a Vauxhall Viva (anyone remember those?) and it came from the base of the roof drip rail, driver's side. It sounded like an organ pipe and started up at 25mph (yes, that car would actually go that fast). I found it by kneeling down and looking up at the joint area, then I could see the little gap which resonated up the screen pillar. A quick plug of sealer cured it.

Thanks Briskodian. Wind noise around the leading edge of the door was my first guess but the dealer said they didn't find any. Not sure what they did to come to this conclusion. I'll have a close look at the panel gaps and report back. BTW your description of the noise as organ pipe is exactly right, unlike my beer bottle effort.
