'Hovering' noise at 55-60mph

Featured Replies

Hey all. Hopefully you'll be able to help me with this one.

Have a 2010 1.6TDI FL Elegance. When I'm driving between 55 and 60mph I tend to hear a noise that's very hard to describe from the dashboard. At first I thought it was the climate control and that there wasn't enough air getting through the vents so I opened the vents yet the sound kept bellowing. I then turned off the climate altogether and yet it's still there.

The noise itself lasts for roughly five seconds and disappears. It's impossible to predict. It's happened on at least five occasions now and I'm beginning to get worried about whether something's loose in the engine bay or that one of the filters is damaged.

Worst part is that because it's so unpredictable is there any point in bringing it to a dealer. With my luck they'll drive it and not hear a thing.

Has anyone experienced it before? It sounds like a hovering noise; the kind when you blow through a comb with paper.

It might be totally wrong but I and others have had problems with wind noise from the door seals just above the level of the mirror. Mine was doing it whilst driving 60 - 65mph and usually when it is windy outside. It is air getting between the outer and inner door seals and setting off a vibration on the A pillar door seal. If it is the same dealer tried the Skoda fix which is to adjust the front door. That only did a temp fix and I have had new door seal fitted (under warranty) which I am hoping has sorted it. Others have reported on here and seems like door seal replacement is the answer. I am sure Skoda wouldn't offer a warranty fix unless a definite design problem.

If it is the door seals then you can eliminate the source of it by taping up the doors with masking tape. This is not a permanent solution obviously and might be unsuitable if if you cannot predict when it will happen.

interesting to read that - i had a noise on my 11 plate octy a few times last weekend which could be this - i've only got 1500 miles on it, but this has never happened before, and hasn't happened since, if it comes back i'll look into the door seal issue some more

My car was about 9 months old and about 8000 on the clock when it started. I could drive on the motorway when it was calm and nothing, then same journey when the wind was blowing and it started. If yours does start again try gently pushing your finger ends in between the door A frame seal and the door about 6 inches above the door trim level. I could stop it and feel the air vibrating the seal setting up what I called a howling noise. Knowing what dealers can be like I actually recorded the noise and played it back to them when I took the car in, the service manager seemed to know straight away what it was and printed off a technical note from Skoda. The fix worked for a couple of weeks but then it started again and when I rang them they asked for the car back and ordered a new door seal. I am hoping it is now sorted. Sorry to be a bit long winded about it but if yours is the same you can quote to the dealer what others like me have experienced.

When driving along pull on the door to create a tighter seal and you'll prob find it goes away. My 59 plate VRS had this on the passenger side and was in and out of the garage 3 times for this where they kept tightening and reinforcing the door hinge. Hasn't come back for some time *touch wood*
