I haven't even got my car yet but I am planning the changes to get it tricked out to make it the true Q car I hope it to be.

I have read good thing about KW suspension dampers and springs and have had a number of my cars lowered and uprated dampers fitted in the past all with good results.

KW variant 3 coilovers from Europerformance.co.uk

These coilovers however really appeal with the quality that they are made and also the on car tuning possibilities, what does everyone think?

Coilovers are over kill if you don't adjust the car for road and track imo.

You'll be better off with fixed springs and uprted dampers imo for road use. Handling will be much better but comfort not compromised so badly. Coilovers are to harsh for pure road use. The thing with the kw v3 is whilst they ar very adjustable for rebound, damping and height etc, its awkward to adjust as the dials are at the top of the struts. If your not going to alter the coilovers for different uses frequently you might as well setle for the KW V1 and have just the one best all round setting

The vRS does need some updated suspension though, lots of body roll, and poor damping. I've had coil over in the past, but this time im going for eibachs springs and bilstein b8 dampers

If you want the car to rattle your teeth out MK4 Golf style then play with the suspension. If you're going to be using it predominantly on the road just leave it standard, ride is acceptably compliant and the whilst there is some body roll its well enough controlled. Admittedly the standard car does look at touch high but pretty much every lowered car I've been in rides like a sack of ****, I personally wouldnt bother, each to their own though.

Id get basic coilovers if your going to do it adjustable kw's are pretty much pointless for road use..

It also depends how low your going. If you want a slight drop then coilovers are still going to be comfotable.

I will say mine is set up very firm but im at the lower reach of the coils.

Other than that janner is right springs and dampers are a good bet For comfort and cheaper than kw's

Am I correct in that just upgrading the springs is just likely to tire the standard dampers faster?

Disagree. Coilovers rattle your teeth out, agreed. But in my experience of driving other cars with eibach springs/koni fsds, and others with bilstein B12 suspension kit(same as eibachs with bilstein b8's) and they rode alot better than stock asnd that's with respect to comfort, damping, harshness, crashiness etc.

Be careful not to tar all suspension setups with thrpe same brush. Some are much more focused than others, and others might just be cheap thrown together kits

Can't answer this directly but it's a good idea to get uprated dampers with new springs. They tend to "match" up. Springs only, will affect comfort.

I don't agree that coil overs are to harsh etc, just choose ones that suit you. Progressive sprung coil overs are available which are no different to regular springs, lowering a coil over doesn't make it harder, spring and damping rate remains the same the vehicle is just lower (unless you get to the point where the bump stop is touching damper body).

The Weitecs and APs are a very good choice in my view for price and the ability just to tailor your ride height to just what you like, with the deals on V1 kits these are also pretty good

Agree with tech1e, if you get AP/Weitec or KW base coilovers you'll be fine for road use. Anything else is for fast road/track use or show looks :)

Having the Estate as well I can say it does need a wee drop, not sure if springs will suffice and last long enough (shocks)

Still depends on what type of driving, and most importantly the condition of the roads you use.

While true that a decent coilover setup, with a reasonable ride height allowing for decent compliance will be fine for some people, on some roads - it's not an ideal setup in other situations.

Put simply, there's no hard and fast rule on what is best to fit. Personal preference, driving style and usual roads travelled are all important considerations.

I am seeing a common response here that a lot of you think a coilover set up will reduce the 'comfort' level, if comfort is translated as softness and bump compliance then I am willing to sacrifice an amount of that over 'control'.

I personally want the car to feel flat in corners and have a willingness to turn in with out feeling nose heavy, I felt that in the test drive I had over the roads I drive which are tight twisty country lanes an local B roads the car kicked off the bumps a lot and felt a little nervous and uncomposed for the performance that is on tap.

The ability to lower the car to get the wheels to sit into the arches a bit more is something I really want as I do really think the car sits a bit high particularly at the rear in the estate... having had lowered cars previously I know the winter capabilities are compromised when ploughing through snow so really like the ability to lift it high for the worst weather.

Has anyone heard of the MK2 been set up on coilovers of any type and what the results have been?

If you want les roll then get a rear ani roll bar. Much les understeer and body roll, but zero change to ride comfort. I do alot of track days and am still unsure weather I want coilovers again. The B8 dampers and eibach springs will give you bugely improved handling as well but without the large drop in ride comfort

As said just buy an all round kit to cater for everything, if you don't mind a firmer ride like myself and find it more entertaining and sportier perhaps for a fast road setup but don't go for fully adjustable as that's a slippery slop and you will end up with the handling worse farting about so much lol
