It depends what type of gap insurance you took from your garage. In most coses your garage will offer you a form of gap insurance called combination return to invoice. What this is supposed to do is to pay the difference between your VRs valuation on the day that it is written off and either the invoice price or the amount outstanding on finance which ever is the greater. IN fact most people now buy on line. Type gap insurance into google.

The best thing to do is to talk to both insurance companies as they will in most cases be valuing your friends car using the same guides. Push them both in terms of pay out and you will be amazed at the difference. Both insurances should work from the market value on the day that the vehicle was written off so there should be no problem. In fact the government regulate the sale of gap insurance and all insurance companies should be committed to treating customers fairly.
