Engine Oil Damage

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I drive a 2004 fabia VRS, it has done 108k, What has happened is that i have forgot to change the oil for 18k, I i want to ask has this done any damage, I no its my fault, I only use the Quantum Platinum (VW 502.00 VW 505.00 VW 505.01), I am going to do full service tomorrow using the same oil, but i am just worried that i might have done some damage. The engine runs fine just a little loud but i this is whys it a little loud, other than that it runs fine pulls like a train.

It usually gets a oil change done every 10k but i have had few family problems so totally forgot to change the oil, i always do full service myself every 10k,

This is the oil i use (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1354)

Thanks, Pete

One last thing, is there a better quality oil i can use or is the quantum good enough, thanks again.

Oil you use is fine, good stuff. as for going 8K past a service, tough one to call, but it won't have done any good that's for sure. Top end of the engine is under incredible stress, due to cam driven injectors. The PD injectors run at up to 29,000 PSI, and the cam lobes take a hammering. Did you not get an oil change and spanner warning on the display?

Listen for tappet noise, and if you hear any, pull the rocker cover off and inspect the cam lobes and bucket tappets. Lobes should all have an edge chamfer all the way round the lobe, and no signs of copper pickup. Bucket tappet tops should be fairly smooth, with no signs of indentations where the cam contacts them.

thanks for the quick reply as for oil sign came on today, as for top end noise, it sounds fine to me just a little loud, as for taking the rocker cover of i will have look tomorrow when i do the oil change, and wll get back to you if i find any damage, so i am looking for play in the cam, do u think i have got away with any major damage, Thanks again

Oh one last this what will a tappet noise sound like, like metal clucking noise?

Tappet noise is a loud clicking/tapping from the rocker cover, can be hard to hear on a diesel, but can often be noticed if you rev the engine to 2k, then let it go back to idle. The tapping will be out of sync with the normal diesel clatter.

I doubt you have done any serious damage, especially if the car is used for decent length runs, and not short trips. Diesel engine oil doesn't get diluted as it does on a petrol engine, but it does collect fairly large soot particles, the oil filter will be in a right state.

As for the camshaft, you are looking for wear on the cam lobes. They are egg shaped, and have an edge chamfer either side of each lobe, that should run round the entire length of the lobe. On worn lobes, part (or all) of the edge chamfer will be gone, and the lobe will have a sharp edge.

Google "Chocolate Camshaft" if you need pictures of what to look for.

The quantum stuff is for variablr servicing isnt it

So its ment to last 20k

Should be allright just get it changed

Thanks i will have a look and let you know and also take some pictures, also can i use some sort of engine flush on pd engines to clean out all gunk that might of built up, if so what would you recommend, as for short trips i do about 60 miles a day so it gets up to full temperature and also i dont take it above 1.5k when cold and hardly ever take it over 3k when im driving, it sits at around 2k most of the time on the motor-way.

Thanks, and as for the chocolate cam i found this (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/264518.aspx?PageIndex=2) i no what to look for and this one has no chamfer mine cant be that bad, thanks again for the help.

How can you drive it not taking it above 1.5k?! Surely it just judders loads?

it runs fine i had a new dog-bone mount about 20k ago so its smooth, maybe your mount might be worn causing the judders, i change gear at 1.5k, but its takes a while to catch some speed.

I`v got numerous mates with fabia`s, all struggle below 1500rpm. Let alone the thought of the clutch and flywheel

matt

It doesn't judder on lower gears, can't do 5th 6th under 1.5k rpm.

I poodle along town with 4th, that's about 1.25k. Do you hang it in 3rd?

i try not to go under 1500 as the engine just sounds better i feel

I try to keep mine above 8k rmp! :p

On a serious note - doesn't your oil fall into the 'fixed' services, which I thought were 10k intervals, with the 2nd one listed being 'variable' (no idea what they are).
