Handbrake Problem

Featured Replies

Having a bit of a problem with my handbrake. It is fully applied after 4 clicks but doesn't hold the car firmly enough. I have checked the brake shoes and roughened them up with wet and dry. There's plenty of lining on the shoes and all seems to be OK with the brake components. Handbrake applies to both wheels OK.

Any help on how to solve this problem greatly appreciated. Thanks.

did you re-adjust the brake shoes properly when putting drums back on ?

also make sure the adjustment at the cable isn't wound right up.

if so loosen adjuster nut at handbrake cable toward end of threaded part and then repeat process of adjusting at brake drums

There is no adjustment at the brake shoe end of the fitment. Adjustment is automatic - the only adjustment is to the handbrake itself which is beneath the centre console. Any more ideas how the rear brakes can be made to hold the car on the handbrake better?

eh.....no.... there is !.providing you have worded youre first post properly.you said "brake shoes" . now does it have brake discs on the back or brake drums ?

if discs then yes no adjustment as its brake pads.

if its drums then there is adjustment at the brake shoes

Definately brake shoes (car has brake drums). Had a look for some form of adjustment at the drum end but couldn't see anything. Brochure says rear brakes are self adjusting. Would appreciate knowing where the adjustment is at the brake shoe end or how to get the handbrake to hold the car better. Many thanks.

yeah most designs these days are "self adjusting" for brake shoes but these are pretty rubbish and usually require manually done.

it's a little hard to explain with no pics but bear with me.

once you've removed the drum and given all a good clean there is a horizontal bar just above the centre of the drum going from one shoe to the other.at the end with the spring attachment (right hand side) you very slightly leaver the horizontal bar with a screwdriver to the left until you hear roughly two clicks.the more clicks you hear the more you are adjusting,so dont do it too much or you won't get the drum back on.but about two should do it.once you put the drum back on make sure threre is a little drag by spinning the drum but not too much drag.

if you want to slacken off the brakes,at the right hand side again there is a vertical leaver.push that down, again listening for clicks.

hope this helps a bit.as I say a little hard to explain with no pictures !

Thank you. Had a go on Friday night. Not perfect but better than they were. But if I adjust any more, there will be too much drag on the rear wheels. Will see how we go for a month or so. Thanks again.
