How much does tank hold on 4x4's?

I filled up Elsie the Helipad today and was only able to put in 54.11 litres. According to the maxidot I had a range of 0 miles. I know they are very generous when estimating the range, but did I really have just under 6 litres left in the tank?

I only ever fill up to first click these days. Given up trying to brim the tank. Not sure if the 'to the brim' figure is 60 litres or if it is the tank without the 'extra' up the filler pipe.

Here is my last tank full. a range of 416 miles. Any one done less in a diesel? emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

After filling up it said the range was 380 miles, but I didn't photograph that.

60 litres is the official capacity of which 10 is classed as reserve. Not sure if this includes room for expansion mind or 60 is the actual liquid capacity.

I'm interested in this 'reserve' tank. :smirk: Does anyone know any more about it? I'm guessing it's always full and will then come into use around the time we are told there's '0' miles remaining?

60 litres is the TANK capacity and is supposed to include a small percentage of expansion room. It does not include the filler pipe.

The 60 liter useable capacity seems to be correct. I have never completely emptied it, but on a few occasions been able to fill in 50 liters when the gauge lights up and says "fill me".

The range values change with the most recent consumption calculations. What happens when you fill up and re-set both the trip counter and the two mxidot counters is not clear to me.

I have read, or been told that its not a good idea filling up to maximum because you burn more fuel carrying it all round.

Apparently, you get better economy by '1/2' filling a tank, but I don't know if any benefits or savings are quantifiable.

Also, it's not a good idea to run a diesel dry, because it doesn't 'pump through' like a petrol vehicle. If you DO run dry, it needs to be taken to a garage to be 'reefed back' into the system.

It may have changed now as this 'advise' is rather old.

We would also get better economy by..hmm. not operating the aircon, not carrying luggage nor passengers. driving around at 51mph or even not drivng at all, Hang it -I am going to fill mine to the brim today , push the envelope and live in the fast lane.

I think my 2wd holds about 60 litres.....but only using it for short trips or taking my wife to work doesn't warrant filling the tank ...so at the moment I am averaging around 47mpg...and I am quite happy with that :thumbup:

depends when your monster was built; 60 litre saddle tank for all MY10 (to end of May 2010 construction), after that date the 2wd models got the simplified golf rear sub frame and conventional 55 litre fuel tank.

No longer need to bleed the fuel through, used to have to crack open the injectors to clear the air. Still wouldn't like to run it dry as you could be dragging through all the rubbish at the low end of the tank.

I have looked back and normally fill when I can get around 50lt's into the tank, usually saying about 60 miles left at this point on the maxidot. I find the range indicated seems to reduce much faster than that though, eg do another 30 miles and range is nearer zero. The most I have ever managed to get in was 54lt's, when from memory it had got down to around 10 miles left? I guess it would be safe to go another 20 or 30 past zero miles without disturbing any sediment in the tank bottom. (Do you recall that Top Gear program where they drove a variety of cars back to uk from germay and onto Blackpool or similar on a single tank to see which had the greatest range. All the cars went long past the zero range on the gauge with a Jag doing a huge further distance and winning?)

I always fill to the brim as I need to refill so often, often twice in a week, and can't be bothered to have to fill up twice as often.

Any theoretical fuel savings by never filling full are mute if you end up having to fill up on a motorway at stupid prices, so I would normally alwaysensure I have enough fuel on board for the return trip and know where the cheapest fuel is locally.
