Hi everybody, I hope this is ok and within the rules of the forum as a first time post, any way, here goes. I have been an owner of 2 Nissan Primera GT's up to now, which have proven to be extremely good and reliable cars, but now I fancy a change and am looking at a Skoda VRS.

When I bought the Primera's, I joined the owners club shortly after and found a wealth of good advice and friends within the club, so I thought I would join here and hopefully seek your advice before I buy.

My main concerns are that I have no previous VW experience at all, are they a fairly good prospect to do your own maintainence on?, Is the cambelt a reasonable DIY task or is it a dealer only job?. Are there any "nasties" that I should be aware of on the car itself?, I am looking at 01-04 plate cars up to about £4000, Is this a pheasable price bracket to get a good low mileage car or do I need to raise my sights financially?.

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to buy wisely, with the best knowledge that I can reasonably get my hands on, and my previous owners club were faultless in this area, so my hopes are high. Thank you all in advance for any help or advice that you can offer.

Cheers

Phil.

Hi Phil & welcome. There's a vRS owners meet at the Grass Hopper

in Westerham tomorrow around one pm if you wanted to come & gain some info?

You haven't specified but judging by the age you're after a Mk1 Octy?

Thanks for the invitation, I will try to get along if I can. In answer to your question on whether I want a Mk1 Octy. from what I've seen on the Autotrader that seems to be all my budget will run to, is this a bad move?, should I try to get more funds for a mk2?. Is it a much better car?. The reason I am looking for a mk1 is mainly because a friend of mine has one and he swears by it, but as I said I know little about the marque so please feel free to educate me. Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated.

Sorry to have missed the meet today, by the time i got clear of a local road holdup due to flooding, the meet was obviously neaarly over, with only a few cars still in the carpark.

I will try to get along to the next meet, but until then, should I not be looking at mk1 Octavia's, are they not a sound buy now they are at a mature age?.

Many thanks for the welcome.

All the best

Phil
