Car not the same after timing belt and service

I got my car back from the garage about 3 hours ago after having the timing belt and a full service. When I got the car onto dual carriage-way it didn't seem to have the same power. It didn't have the same punch in the back at just under 2k revs like it normally does but it did seem to pick up ok from about 2.5k revs. After about 20 miles it threw up the engine management light.

Obviously i'm taking it back to the garage first thing in the morning but has anyone got any ideas why this might be?

I'd say the timings out, my first thought was that previously mapped and you've had the ecu reset but not if the light is up. Must be timings not correct, remember that garages have the apprentice do work like that... Not the pro's.

Yep, most likely.

And if they have managed to get it a tooth out they haven't even gone about it the right way, with proper tools it's impossible to get it a tooth out.

It was an independant garage. I've had them do a timing belt for a previous Fabia with no problems. I've heard there's a quick fix way of doing it with tippex/paint and was assured this wasn't how they do it. I want to ask the right questions to get to the bottom of it tomorrow.

It doesn't take anymore time to pop in the proper tools to lock the engine.

What tools/techniques should/shouldn't they use? Just so I can appear a little bit knowledgable when I talk to them tomorrow.

Hi, i work in a garage and this engine is very easy to time up, theres a special crank tool which sits on the crank pully teeth and fits in to the engine via little lug at the same time as two arrows match up, for the cam shaft its pretty much of the top of my head a 6.5mm drill bit or anything with same dia and round. it just pushes through the cam pulley into the cylinder head in the correct postion, cant go wrong really!!!!

could also be if any multi plugs have been left off etc!

I say ake it back just say it hasnt felt right plus your light coming on and you want to see the timming tools etc, google it so you know what t looks like.

Well I put my car in first thing this morning. They rang about 1.5 hours later and said there was a split in the turbo vacuum pipe(I think that's what they said, something along those lines anyway). I got the car back and no problems at all. No extra charge imposed so all's cool in the school. Never doubted them for a moment :giggle: . Cheers for all your help and advice everyone :thumbup:

When raising the engine it may have inadvertently pulled a hose off, by them saying one was split was a way of saying it was not their fault; can you see a new hose fitted ?

Whatever the situation, it's nice to know it's sorted, I had a similar experience when I had a cam belt changed and it took three visits (50 mile round trip) back to the main Skoda dealer before it was resolved, needless to say they blamed everyone else and not themselves.
