How do you take engine cover off?!

Featured Replies

I just bought a K&N panel filter for my MK2 VRS (petrol) . I had a look under the hood but I think I need to remove the plastic engine cover to fit it :o . From the look of it the air box is located at the rear of the engine? I've never removed the engine cover so I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea how to remove it without me braking it. Thanks

The filter housing is in the engine cover - a design flaw rectified in the TSi - its actually quite simply to change the filter though. Remove the pipe from the front of the intake, then there should be a jubilee clip on the turbo side which needs loosening off. Then working from the front you need to pull the engine cover up, it will need a bit of force. You should then see the studs that it pushes on to - you may leave the rubber parts behind - a bit of washing up liquid on these will make refitting much easier.

Once the engine cover is off, flip it over and there are a few screws to remove to get to the filter. Refit in reverse.

Ok, I had a go at trying to remove the cover but it won't budge! I then thought, maybe I need to unscrew a few nuts but I can't see anything on the cover that needs unpluging or unscrewing other than the MAF sensor & air intake pipe! Is this job just a matter of pulling the cover off? I don't want to brake it! I used to have a Ford Escort 10 years ago and this job on that car took 5 mins to do! Damn the engine covers!

Have you removed all the pipe work? It will need a bit of force, especially on an older car. I am in Whitfield mate, if you are down this way I would be happy to lend a hand.

Thanks mate, where is Whitefield? I live in Westerham Kent. My Skoda is the mk2 version. I had a good look yesterday and there are no screws on the cover at all. I don't really want to take it to the garage to have it fitted (labour charge) If you're not to far i'd be happy to pop down sometime if you're up for the job, thanks. Let me know what you want to do. Cheers.

Whitfield is a village on the out skirts of Dover (where the Ferrys go from :giggle: ).

Mine is a mk2 also, I had to use a bit of effort when I removed mine and that was a couple of years ago when it was only 2-3 years old. I'm at work now til wednesday, but if you want to come down PM you mobile number and I will give you a shout.

Dover?! :o That's miles away from me! :D I've tried to take the damn cover off again this morning but no luck. I'm pulling as hard as I can but it just won't come off! :@ I phoned up my local garage and asked them to remove it for me and leave the cover off! I'm going to change my K&N pannel element for a proper induction kit including heat shield from GTI Performance. Why Skoda put the air box in such a stupid place is any bodies guess?

Never mind, just a thought. I am a bit cofused about it I must confess, once the intake pipe is removed its only held on by 4 rubber gromits that push down on to corresponding plugs.......when you see it off (and the bill for 1/2 hour labour) you will kick yourself.

Which intake are you going for? I can highly recommend the EVOMs.

I took it to a local garage and was hoping they'd be able to remove the cover. Unfortunately they also can't remove it! :( I even gave them a hand but it's such a tight fit the only way it will come off is if I brake the cover! A new cover cost £200! from Skoda! I did see where the gromits are and was wondering if it was possible to remove the bracket that holds the gromits? They are held by 1 shiny bolt each which I could easily unscrew, what do you think? I was going to fit a K&N panel element in the air box but if the cover does come off it will be a proper enclosed induction kit from EBC or K&N. I prefer enclosed so only cold air goes into the turbo no hot air!

I was just thinking would it be safe to use WD40 to try and remove the cover or would this be a fire hazard?

You may have seen the front bolts but you will definitely not be able to get at the back 2. WD40 will be fine, even with the engine running it will not be a fire hazard......

Tbh adding a K&N or Piper X panel filter is IMO pointless for improving performance, you will gain approx' 1-1.5 bhp from it, where as a complete intake will see increases of 10-15 bhp even without a remap.

The offer is still there if you are ever down this way.

I'm not intending to put the pannel filter in the box anymore after I remove this cover. The filter box is part of the back of the engine cover! This means if I take the cover off I need to unscrew nuts under the cover to open the air box and replace the pannel filter and put it back! I'm just going to take the cover off some how and leave it off  The pannel filter is going back to(Awesome GTI) and I'm having a proper induction kit istead. I really like the look of the K&N P-Flo Induction Kit they have for sale for £188 :) with heat shield. Would you recomend any particular induction kit from these guys? I also like the fully enclosed carbon induction kit. B)

I can't comment on the K&N but it certainly isn't one of the proven types for the Tfsi engine, having said that the design of most of these are the same so the difference can't be huge. As I said previously, I have the EVOMs which has always been a popular choice, ITG is another good one. The self contained carbon fitlers are also good if thats what you mean, if however you mean the Carbonio intake then you are wasting your money.

Just messaged you with the details of a Tfsi engine cover on the mk5golfgti forum, getting that will give the option to modify yours (when you get it off) and reuse, then when you sell the car if go back to standard you will have a replacement for a fraction of the stealers price.
