Newbie question

Hi guys and gals just found your forum by chance there and thought i'd ask you guys a few questions.

My old man has just purchased a 54 plate Octavia 1.9TDI 90BHP model. Its basically been purchased for a Taxi. There are not many in his area that are being used for taxis(soon to change) so i would not mind finding out a bit of info on them.

Firstly servicing is going to be a big issue for him as he is covering 5k a month, what should he expect to pay for the 10k-20k-30k and so on from a skoda dealership.

Also what are skoda like regards warranty if the car has been serviced with a non skoda dealer but all parts used are skoda.

Also what if he provided his own oil with the service what oil is recommended.

And finally has there been any known faults to look out for that have been common with the octavias in the past.

Much appreciated in advance.

Hi Keevster ... Welcome on board

The TDi Octys are very durable and solid ....

(And I still have this Opinion after having

trouble with my one today...)

The VAG recommended Oil might be taken..

Service prices and warranties :

I am unfortunately no real help at this point.

Service prices and perhaps the one or other

warranty issue are a bit different over here.

But with a little time, you sure get lots of hints

and answerd over here..

If you use the search function, on the site, there is an excellent chance you will find all the answers you need, ( & I bet you get diverted to other threads as well ). :)

Some basic answers :-

Servicing prices vary from dealer to dealer, would suggest look in dealer reviews, or search threads on dealers in your area.

As far as non dealer servicing but Skoda parts, I believe EU ruling is that dealers cannot run away from warranty problems.

Oil - Find out if the car has fixed or variable servicing ( a search here will reveal how to find out which type the car has ) would ALWAYS use recommeded oil on the PD engine, I always asked for Long Life oil in my previous Octy despite being on fixed intervals.

On the known faults - I only know of 1 when used as a Taxi, the gear box will last approx 200000 miles if not abused.

Hope this helps

From a post I made elsewhere, relating to an RS, which should be comparable to the TDI in terms of cost:

Had mine for 32 months, did 138k miles in it.

Fuel economy; motorways cuising at 80-85 indicated, I'd get about 38mpg, A roads about 35, brisk driving on A roads about 30-32, trackdays about 12 and the Ring about 8-10 mpg.

Servicing costs: You can either go variable servicing or fixed 10k servicing. I went 10k due to my mileage and needing to know when it would need a service. Costs were:

10k =
