2005 Fabia VRS 1.9PD 130BHP

Hi,

A relative has to reluctantly change her 2005 Fabia VRS 1.9PD due to her company car policy not allowing vehicles over five years old.

The car's got a Full Skoda Service History and its had no expense spared on it if its needed anything in the time they've had it. The current mileage is 37,000.

Dad's test driven it with Mum and its looking very likely that we'll be purchasing it from them when the new car's delivered in October.

I have a couple of questions:-

1) Cambelt: We'll probably change it for piece of mind. What mileage should they be done and how much on this engine?

2) A slight rumble from the back.

3) Are there any known problems with the 1.9PD 130BHP engines or with the car for that matter.

1. normally done around 60,000 miles iirc

3. check for dampness in the rear footwells as the door cards have a habit of leaking if they haven't been sealed correctly.

Cambelt is 60,000 or 4 years whichever comes first. I just got the cambelt, tensioners, water pump and coolant changed for £250.

Common things to look out for on these engines are MAF sensor (may just been the connections that have accumulated some crud on them), a broken alternator load signal cable (may not be a problme yet with mileage of car), boost leaks on connectors etc, check that turbo vnt is moving as it should. Other than that pretty solid engines.

1. 60k or 4 yrs as said before

2. Not sure on the rumble - wheel bearing possibly? Sticky Caliper?

3. As long as it's serviced at the correct intervals you should be fine. Mine is at a little under 150k miles and hasn't missed a beat (modified for at least 100k)

I just had the cambelt, waterpump, tensioners and coolant done today with all genuine parts. £300 so not a massive bill.

If it's been serviced to schedule by Skoda for the company they should have picked up on the cambelt and done it. May be worth your relative raising it with fleet manager at work as they may do it before it is sold :)

Check the rear tyres for you rumble noise, as if they wear unevenly they step on the edges and make a terribly rumbling noise like a wheel bearing. So just jack it up or and check the tyre pattern and see if they are worn abnormally at all, usually like a 50pence piece!

Thanks for the advice guys. The cam belt hasn't been done so will see if my relative will speak to the fleet manager at work.

With regards to the rumble, the uneven tyre wear sounds very plausible, so whoever gets it into the garage for the cam belt (whether it be us or my relative before the sale), will get them to jack it up and see what condition the rear tyres are in. It needs two front tyres in the near future anyway so thats's another bargaining point if thats the case.
