Variable boot floor

Featured Replies

So my big White combi is sat in Germany waiting for a boat ride to the UK.

As I read posts here I've started to figure out the boot floor is not flat, and the model I test drove was most likely fitted with the variable boot floor option.

I did however spec in a spare tyre and choose the Elegance spec, so I get the partition rail system.

So what I'm asking is, does the standard estate / combi have a flat floor? if not does the spare tyre mean the floor is flat? the tyre taking up more room, or can the vari floor be ordered and fitted later? I.e. by the dealer at my cost, and how bigger job is that, is it just a one or two piece slot in box or is it fitted in some way?

I really hope it not something fundimentaly different about the car making it a big job to retro fit, my wife is not a light packer and I liked the idea of keeping my bits and bobs in the big tray.

Any help from the many combi drivers out there would be much appreciated.

Hi Harry

does the standard estate / combi have a flat floor?

Yes the BOOT floor is flat, the spare wheel does not encroach into the boot space at all, but you have a lip at the rear (by the bumper) and at the front when the rear seats are folded down, the variable boot floor makes the loading edge (by the bumper) level with the folded down rear seats, making a truly flat load area, IMO any estate that does not have a flat load area is a waste of time.

I have seen them on eBay (for an Octavia though) so they must be easy enough to remove, I have not looked too closely to mine but from what I remember the sides of the variable floor are just bolted into place with the variable boot floor then slid into the two sides - the aluminium load restraint strips are however on top of the new sides so they will need repositioning, I would imagine any competent mechanic (or even fitter) could do the retrofit in around an hour or two.

The Elegance estate usually comes with the 'raise' floor that is level to the boot sill. The floor is easily removed in all of 2 minutes to give a deeper boot area. the spare wheel is located under the normal boot floor.

Not in the Superb it doesn't, you need the variable boot floor for that

Ditto, so I assumed this was the norm, I guess if there's extra space you should have the option to use it.

I'm not sure it's a job I should attempt on my own, so I'll ask the dealer if they can sort it, or I'll live with it, it's a minor thing, but level is better. Live and learn I guess

Thanks gizmo

The Variable boot floor consists of the two side bars and the foldable lid which forms the floor. They can be bought and retro fitted at a later date but personally i would get it and just take it out when you don't need it and replace with a boot tray

I keep my boot floor in all the time except when going camping and find it really useful for hiding stuff like the laptop etc under.

I have no variable boot floor, but therefore have a bigger boot... the extra few inches in height is important to me for the load i carry for work.

I removed the variable load floor on my Superb. A bit difficult was it but after an hour it was finished. You have to cut with a saw at the back. The best is if you order the car without load floor, for it was not perfect, but very close.

Sry for google translate...

Can imagine it's also a good place to store the components of the sliding partition system if they have been removed for reason of opening up the boot space.

Agree with those who have stated an Estate needs the possibility to get a completely flat boot floor, but can also appreciate that sometimes those few extra inches of vertical height can make all the difference. Though in my experience regarding height it's almost, but not always, the rear aperture height that has been the limiting factor.
