Tax on my new car.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I picked up my car at the end of January 29th, I just noticed today that my TAX disc runs out In December. Is this normal?

I would have expected it to be registered in January so it should have a full year? so Jan-Jan I could maybe understand this if I got it at the start of the month, but not the last day of the month.

On a completly unrelaited note, I saw my First VRS on the road today... a very nice Blue with White roof. Driver flashed, I was to slow to flash back, but he got a thumbs up and a big cheesy grin

Thats why people usually wait until the 1st of a month to get a new car so you get 12 months full tax. Tax will ALWAYS expire at the end of the month previous to when you purchase it.

Yep - i agree it is a rip off - why they can't do it from the reg date in this day and age is beyond me.

The dealer can tax it for 53 weeks for a small extra charge to avoid this situation

They can indeed

Shouldn't it be 55 weeks?

No, it's a year and a week.

i.e if you tax it on feb 1st then tax runs out jan 31st. Tax it on jan 23rd, tax runs out December 31st. Add a week when you buy on jan 23rd to cover till feb 1st and your tax will expire on jan 31st

So when is it best to get a new car taxed?

You can tax it anytime - you just need to make sure your dealer adds the extra week if it is in the last week of the month.

Had my car registered 30/06/2005 (last day of June) and road tax is yearly due last day of that June month.

As your car was registered before the the last day of the month, the road tax would now be due the first of that month.

If it were paid/due later than 29th.December, then technically you would not have a valid road tax disc for them odd days after the 29th. December to the 31st December.
