Insurance and Modifications

Featured Replies

My insurance is now due, and I've noticed that lately a lot of the price comparison sites are now more modification friendly.

My mods are as follows:

Shark Performance Remap

312mm brakes

Whiteline RARB

Now the brakes are no problem as a lot of them have "Uprated brakes" as an option. The RARB and remap are a bit more tricky.

A lot of sites simply list "Chipped/Engine Management System" - which to me, is exactly what a remap is. Some people call it chipping, I call it a remap, but it basically gives the same result.

I've never seen an option for an anti-roll bar, and there is usually the option for "Suspension - lowered" or "Suspension - Other"

Choosing "suspension - other" is technically being truthful in the little options that they give, but how likely are they to not want to pay out in the event of a claim because they didn't have the exact choice for the mods?

I'd go with exactly those options Sam

your RARB is a suspension mod and it is "other" than the ones given as specific options.

It's how i considered mine and my front strut brace when i was on comparisons last time around.

I'd go with that for the online stuff and then speak to the company direct to confirm exact details if the price is any good.

At which point they'll probably change the details and the price will suddenly become very un-good (you know who you are directline!))

In fact when i did mine with Adrian Flux i used those criteria and once they'd taken on the policy they sent out a form for me to list the exact details of all modifications

That's the thing. I got a really good price with Admiral with exactly those options chosen, when I phoned up to confirm, they said "We don't cover remaps. We can cover chipping though"

Ok this I don't get. Using compare the market - select "Suspension - other", the cheapest quote I get is £2,200 Selecting "Suspension changes" - £648

What!!???

i found that after days of comparing the market I just phoned Adrian flux and got the best price anyways :)

Because of an at fault accident, they couldn't get anywhere near my renewal price

I found Skoda Insurance the best for me and the Mrs with rear anti roll bar, alloys, eibach lowering springs declared. Very helpful on the phone as well.

I rang to enquire about a remap however and it added £130 to the policy which I felt was too much so didn't go ahead with it.

Once you have modifications then the price comparisson sites really are no longer your friend.

I've seen people get quotes, ticking all the right modification boxes, but the policy recommended doesn't include them.

I'd really recommend phoning up for quotes - that is the only way you can be 100% sure that all modifcations are declared and you won't have problems at claim time.
