rear brake guard corrosion

Featured Replies

Hi anybody,

just prior to getting home a noticed a "light rubbing type noise from the rear. When checked found that the rear dsc brake guard had almost corroded away and was hanging loose. Have now removed it. Does this need to be replaced, and if so how urgent?

any input welcome...

I think this guard just prevents muck, stones and general road debris from getting to and therefore settling on the caliper, hub or disc.

I'd be tempted to replace it but wouldn't thought there needs to be a rush, just aim to do it before winter.

Can't imagine they'd be too expensive, you might even be able to pick a second hand one up...

Mine fell off over the winter whilst on a long motorway run and it made a mess of the inside of the alloy.

I still haven't replaced it, but intend to do so in a week or so.

Price wise - about the £20 mark new I think.

I can see a reason for these on the front as if you get a split in a CV boot or a leak from a driveshaft seal it stops the slippy stuff getting on the disc - very dangerous when you hit the brakes and one side has no friction!

Not as important on the back as there isn't really anything that could contaminate the disc, but it looks quite odd with one side having a sh£tshield and one side not.....
