Elegance Information Panel oddity

Featured Replies

I have a new 2011 Octavia Elegance - 1.4 petrol - and an oddity in the Information Panel. Although everything else is in miles, or miles per hour, the digital readout of speed in the bottom right corner is in Kilometers per hour. How can I change it to mph? The speedo is mph and consumption etc in mpg - just this one oddity.

Is there a way to get at a service menu or somewhere I can change it?

I have looked at the manual and asked the garage, but they don't know how to do it.

Cheers,

Ray D

Welcome Ray,

You need a member who has VCDS to make the changes this will remove the KPH display (replaced with the outside temperature) and it will then give you the option of a large (1"+ roughly) MPH display that can be accessed through the MFD (the KPH can also be turned back on again through the MFD - no need for VCDS each time)

I have personally done several Superb's, Octavia's and Yeti's

The reason for the oddity is that there should always be an option of viewing your speed in both mph and kph.

Most manufacturers print both on the speedo, however the Octavia doesn't, hence the digital kph display.

If you never plan on taking the car abroad then as above it may be worth the effort of having it changed.

Even if you do go abroad it is worth doing, it takes about 5 seconds to reactivate it - the same amount of time it takes to switch your lights to 'tourist setting'

So how come the Skoda dealership I bought from don't know how to do it? Shouldn't they have the VCDS gear to program the Skoda firmware?

The dealer will not do it because what you have to do to do this change is change the country within the system to Australia I believe. A GB dealer is not going to be allowed to change the country setting to another country I suspect. Especially since it takes away the permenant kph reading which I believe is required within the UK/EU by law. So the dealer would be effectively breaking the law!!!!!

Correct the cars country needs to be changed, dealers do not use VCDS, they have VAS, which is much harder and not as user friendly to use, not to mention that many dealers do not even know how to do 'official' coding correctly :dull:

It is not breaking the law because it can be re enabled at any time in a few seconds with the maxidot buttons.

I thought the law required a permenant kph display and not just the ability to get a kph display (although I could be wrong). Why else would the kph always be displayed on the maxidot? Still do not see the problem with the kph being permenantly displayed though (never bothered me).

No, as long as the other display is available, it doesn't need to be displayed. Think of all the vehicles out there with digital speedo displays, they don't have 2 separate displays for mph and kph, you switch between the two as required. I remember doing just that a few years ago when we took our old Citroen Picasso over to France on holiday, it was a 5 second play about with the buttons by the speedo to change the display to kph on that.

That's right - has to be capable of displaying kph not a permanent display.

However, unless the OP has maxidot he will not be able to switch between kph and mph so that will not be legal.

Without maxidot you cannot enable Australia anyway

I assuned (maybe wrongly?) that all Elegance's would have maxidot as std?

No, £130 option on its own, on the Elegance.
