A few questions regarding the VCD I keep seeing threads about!

Featured Replies

I keep seeing threads about VCD, I have a few questions about.

1) what does it mean?

2) cab it be used on standard mfd?

3) procedure to have such things as ch/lh lights?

4) list of all options you can have?

5) do companies carry out the procedure?

Be great if any one can help

Assume you are talking about VCDS?

VCDS stands for VAGCOM Diagnostic System (I believe)

Basically it is a cable that is supplied by Ross-Tech in the USA used for diagnosis and some tuning of your cars ECU. I don't mean power maps etc - I mean features such as coming home/leaving home lights, MPH displays etc etc.

So that's 1.

2. It can be used on any car

3. Think I covered this one 1.

4. This depends on what "modules" have been installed in the car, but generally all of the ones you see people talking about here are accessible on most cars. If you have a new car (I think you have a Mk2 vRS) then there are some newer modules that the software cannot communicate with yet, however Ross Tech are continually developing the software, so you should be able to find more "goodies" in the future.

5) Not sure if there are specific companies, bound to be - but there are a number of members on the forum that have them (Myself included, me and my Dad went in halves to buy one as we both have Skoda's and the "proper" cable from Ross-Tech is around £300 when we bought it - though it is worth every penny. AVOID cheap chinese knock off ones - they generally don't work with the Ross Tech software, and frankly I wouldn't trust my car with one of those...

Hope this helps

Right I see, that's great help, and yes it will be mk2 vrs as off 2 weeks :)

Gorebrush has pretty much covered the basics there, but just to clarify one point he made:

2. It can be used on any car

It can be used on any VAG (VW Audi Seat Skoda Bentley etc) car, it may have very limited connection with other marques but these will be pretty basic (especially when compared to the options available to VAG cars).

Ah yes - any VAG group car of course!

Thanks for pointing that out - didn't want to create any unnecessary confusion
