Has he got an Insurance quote yet, that may well put him off

No not yet, but that wont stop him he's had in the past toyota MR2 turbo, Calibra 4x4 turbo, Golf VR6 & so on.

All above ended in tears

Used to have a '98 turbo :D The '98 is the first facelift "classic" and should have the nice interior with bucket seats, white dials and switches which look like the belong in a car. Make sure it has a full Subaru (or specialist) history which means a service every 7.5k and cambelt done at 45k, and also make sure he starts it from cold so he can hear if it has "piston slap" which was the curse of the '98 engines (although mine never suffered from it). :)

Check if the car's an import - clues will be rear wiper on saloon, and no front headlight washers. It will also have an adjusted speedo and may be limited to 112mph, depending on who imported it. As you said it's a 2000 AWD turbo, it sounds like it's a UK one, so a mere 208bhp!

Running costs will probably be on a par with the other cars he's had, and the Scooby is only Gp 17 ;) Other than that, tell him to enjoy it and try not to kill himself or anyone else in it!

Btw, I was paying 1200 quid with Tesco for my Scooby at age 23. Excess was 750 quid though  and they required an alarm and tracker as the standard fit immobiliser is a bit pathetic :D

Chris

I think, with tesco's - you have to be 21 or 23 for a wrx/turbo. And 25 for an STI. This is a fairly new thing, so i'm not 100%, but my mates have tendancies to write them off, and are always struggling for insurance.

One of my mates paid

if its a 2000 then defo a turbo, the non-turbo's and imprezza sport, my mates got one. waste of time having and imprezza without a turbo
