Real world MPG 1.6 TDi 105bhp DSG 7 speed 'box

Featured Replies

Hi

As you can see i currently have a Roomie but its coming up for renewal, its a Motability car, and I'm looking around at some estates... Whilst the Octavia is outside my price bracket I can run to a Golf Estate... Their pricing on Advance Payments is better for some reason...

I've looked and test drove both the 5 speed manual and 7 speed DSG versions of the 1.6 TDi 105bhp and like the car... As my daughter can only drive autos we're looking seriously at the DSG, but I'm concerned about fuel consumption taking a hit with the auto 'box and with that being the only cost we have its very important...

There doesn't seem to be a VW Forum like Briskoda which has such a fund of knowledge and as the set up is the same for both the Octy and Golf I'd think the figures would be very similar...

So, finally (!) does anyone have the above combination of 'box and engine in an Octy (or Golf!) and can tell me what MPG they are getting?

Thanks, Folks!

I got an Octavia 1.6 CR DSG.

Done 14,000 in 11 months.

Get 40 odd on the cold 3 mile first run each day.

getting 50 mpg realistic on short run /mixed motoring

Only get 55 odd on longer runs.

Managed 62 on a long lazy summer Sunday all day outing of about 200 miles

Be curious to see how we do on our Balkan Expedition, starting 05:00 Thursday 18th Aug, but I suspect the Autobann runs will see us back to 50 odd.

Had 55mpg at 56 mph ave on the last 50 mile run to Belfast, with up to an indicated 80 mph on the Motorway.

I'd be quite happy with 50+ on the autobahns at about 85 or so, the Roomie only does 42!

Cheers, DD... Just out of interest what is the rpm at 70 in 7th gear?

I have had a couple of these this year as courtesy cars and did 50 miles in one and 200 miles in the other.

Hard to be accurate as I didn't do enough miles for brim to brim but trip computer said low 50's so reckon that high 40's was realistic. Fuel gauge and low fuel light agreed pretty much with that.

I was pleasantly surprised how quiet and refined they were. Progress on A and B roads in the Yorkshire Dales was pretty brisk in S mode on the DSG, but seemed to overly favour high gears in D mode where it seemed reluctant to kick down unless the throttle was stabbed to the floor.

ERm

I bes talking "brimmed" figures

Which over 4 or 5 thou miles are were only 2 to 3 % optimistic.

EDIT

I dug out my fuel consumption card, fill & miles noted but not calculated for a while so now updated.

Over 7861 miles & 153.55 gall = 51.195 mpg less say 3% = 49.659

OK

say 50mpg

Not quite the quoted combined of 61 mpg but hey ho will do

Thanks, will do... Though its a bit late now as after another test drive I've gone and bought it... Collect early November when the lease runs out... They are holding the car for me! Does seem a nice 'box, though I never managed to get it up to 7th gear, 50mph was as fast as I could go! Just tried and was rejected... sent them an email...

Hows New Longton, btw, I was born and brought up in Hutton many, many years ago!

Have moved from a 1.6 CR manual to 1.6 CR DSG. Covered 30K in manual daily commute and leisure over very heavy city traffic, A and B roads. This averaged long term between 48 and 55 MPG.

2K into the DSG in identical conditions and this seems to be getting between 48 and 52 MPG. The small loss of MPG is more than made up by the utter pleasure of driving it. The DSG is so sweet !!

Has anyone has any advice on how to squeze the most MPG from a DSG?

Cheers

I got a new 1.6tdi dsg in June and have done 10,000 miles now. Got to agree with your comments on the dsg. Its brilliant in my view, especially from standstill at lights. Few ordinary cars neither expect it nor can keep up with it. In answer to your question, I just drive it to enjoy it, giving it plenty of welly whenever I can because it seems to thrive on it. I do a 55 mile daily commute, being a mixture of motoway and city and get 50 mpg regularly. Just done a 450 round day trip to Basinstoke for a meeting, comprising a fast run home up the M40/M42/M6 toll followed by a long stop start slog up the M6 home and the computer showed (probably slightly optimistically I know) 61 mpg for the trip. So my advice is don't baby it to get the best MPG. Enjoy it, give it some beans (keeps the innards and the DPF happier) and it will reward you with a bit of fun and good mpg!

I've never driven a 1.6tdi DSG, but with my 2.0tdi dsg I find it doesn't change up quite as early as I'd like for optimum economy.

So for ultimate economy on mine, I select manual mode and change up myself...usually a couple of hundred RPM before the DSG would have done. I think I can get a 5% improvement in economy using this technique.

I don´t have the DSG box, but on my manual I get around 5.5L/100km or less.

If I really ,really try I can go for 4.5L/100km or less.

But I myself like to push sometimes so the filter won´t give any troubles.

Here´s a pic of a full tank, 950km and still 135km to end.

And yes it now has 140hp instead of 105hp
