The 5 speed gearbox in my 05 plate Octy tdi pd is about to die (GQQ BOX) ! Been advised by my local (and very knowledgeable) mechanic to go for a full recon box instead of gambling on second hand item. Mine has done bout 165k (taxi) and bearings whining, shaft noises and occasional jumping from reverse and first gear. A couple of local rebuilders want just to repair broken componenets but would prefer full recon. Anywhere "up North" that anyone could recommend? Closer to Newcastle area preferred but will travel to get a proper box! Consider supply or supply and fit. Any recommendations gratefully received!

I've used Billingham Transmissions in Billingham and Select-a-gear in Middlesbrough. Both good in my experience.

I have had a vw golf box recon from a place in dunston.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if they carry on the shelf exchange units? Do they offer fit options? Would prefer to take recommendations of club members instead of playing internet-roulette!

Would they repair your box to a full recon condition though as that could be an option.
