Is it worth just upgrading the HU?

Featured Replies

I have a Occy Vrs with standard ICE, is it worth u/g the standard HU and changer? I have no need for a Sub but would like a better sound, would i be wasting my time without u/g the speakers too?

Thanks

Yes, it would be worth upgrading the headunit, and no, you woulnd't be wasting your time without upgrading the speakers.

Though you may choose to upgrade the speakers too... :D

Rob.

If it's anything like the Symphony HU in the Fabia, then yes it's worth it.

I'm not planning on upgrading the speakers or adding amps & subs. The standard speakers are well up to the job with a decent HU.

Replacing the headunit and cd changer is expensive for the small improvement you'll get. The standard speakers in Skodas appear to be pretty nasty quality so I'd start by replacing the front speakers first. The Symphony headunit won't go up that loud, it's only 20W x 4 but it certainly isn't low quality.

That's 20W PMPO - I wouldn't want to put an amp that weak near decent speakers.

I'd say the larger gains would come from replacing the head unit - this is based on comparing an Octy with standard speakers and a decent head unit to an Octy with the standard head unit and aftermarket speakers.

Rob.

I replaced the speakers in the Octy with some Sony custom fit jobbies.

It improved the sound upto what you would expect from a standard system in standard car.

I then replaced the HU and wow what a difference, the standard head unit produces thin hissy treble and because it hasn't got the power to produce any meaningfull bass it just lumps all the bass together to give a muddy boom effect.

I would change the HU first as this will give the best increase per pound. Saying that when you have a decent HU you will be hearing the sound through some of the cheapest paper cone speakers I have ever come across.

Cheers

Lee

Also, I think it's generally agreed that the OEM speakers in the fabia are better than those in the octy and can take extra power (even with an amp) more easily than octy speakers.

As Rob said, technically, you're more likely to damage speakers with an underpowered (i.e. OEM) head unit than an after market one or OEM/after market + amp.

Also, remember if you change the HU, you'll lose the compatibility with the Skoda CD changer. However, you can always get a CD HU which will play back MP3s (if you have them).

If I had to chose the order in which I'd change things, I'd:

  • 1- Change head unit
2- Add an amp and a sub
3- Add an amp to power improved speakers

JMTPW :)

If i u/g i will be getting a new changer also, does the standard stuff fetch any money??

No , just keep it to put back in when you sell the car

I'm with Z on that one :) Hang on to it - it's not worth losing. You're unlikely to get much for selling it (it is a tape deck only) and it could be far more "valuble" the day you part with the car ;)

As i thought ;) Sorry to be a dimwit, but i have never done stuff with changers before, should a new HU and changer be straightforward to fit? ie. Will they pretty much just plug in? And will i lose any other functions, i heard someone had probs with central locking??

I just fitted a new sony head unit in my octy last weekend & yes it pluged straight in, i dont know much about changers but im sure you would have to run new cables from your h/u to the rear of the car for new changer.

Good luck if you DIY it makes a big difference to sound quality & its defo worth doing speakers to make the most of the h/u.

PS Make sure you get the h/u removal tools because i found it a pain using bits of plastic (credit cards/hacksaw blade etc).

The Octy has a standard Din slot and a standard ISO connector.

VAG wiring is slightly different as the constant positive and ignition feeds are the wrong way round. This will mean that most HU's will not retain their memory.

Fortunatly this just means swapping the red and yellow wires over and many HU have bullit connectors in the loom to allow this.

If you don't fancy swapping over the wires then Halfords sell a convertion lead.

Yes i know what you mean, i fitted my brothers HU in his Cupra and had to do that, so thats not a problem, its more the changer i'm worried about. Is that likely to slot in to existing wiring? Thanks :)

Not a hope... ;)

Most CD changer interconnects will be a single wire though, which is dead easy to run down the trim. Best to leave the original wiring in place for "reversibilty".

There's a Sony changer which will connect to the Skoda HU...but not a HU (from any manufacturer) which will connect to the Skoda changer.

And for what Sony charge for that changer, in most cases it would be cheaper to buy a HU and changer package from elsewhere...

Rob.

It was far cheaper for me to change the HU for a MP3 Player than to by a CD changer.

This means I can get up to 12 albums on one disc, depending on what quality you convert the files to.

If you don't mind copying all your CDs onto your PC, & then burning them onto discs, then I would recommend it.

Well thats what i thourt

I well have to replace the lot

so I am looking for an Octy rear Shellf to graft my 8" x 10" into
