Tips for buying used petrol VRS

Featured Replies

I'm looking at a used (06) plate VRS petrol and I'm wondering if there's anything I need to look/listen out for? loud turbo whine/rattle/common faults/etc?

Thanks for any help :)

Check for even wear across the rear tyres.

Check for dual zone climate aircon, front armrest, rear electric windows options pack (all came as part of optional "Jumbo pack").

Check aircon works.

Ask about ABS/ESP G201 tevesMk60 fault.

It's from a garage so I doubt they'll know if that fault has been fixed. If not how bad can it be?

£215+vat for a repair kit and then an hours labour on top.

That's not too bad, it's done 60k miles anyway.

Any other tips?

Thanks for the info so far

A Skoda garage?

If so they should have the car's history on their computers, if not, details of the repair should be in the paperwork.

Also, an 06 *should* have had its cambelt done (either 4 yrs or 60k), so make sure it has, and if not make sure you get £400 off the price to compensate.

Also check the alloy size as 18s were still only an option on a car of that age.

Yep it's got 18" alloys, and it's not from a Skoda dealer unfortunately. I've got the cam belt question down already, had the same thing with my current Octy when I bought it.

It doesn't have Maxidot which is a shame, it's something I was looking for, but as it can be done aftermarket by Shark it's not too much of an issue.

Got a link to the car in question?

Chris's list in post 2 is a good one. Rear tyre wear would be top of my list as well. As it'll cost you two new tyres plus alignment costs if they're not right. Listen out for rumbling on a smooth road around 30-40mph, while out on test drive.

Check full operation of the AC/climate system too. Can be potentially pricey to fix, and faults aren't all that uncommon.

Turbo operation on a standard car, with standard mapping should be pretty quiet. Any odd 'whooshes' and noise could be indicative of a worn turbo, or issue with the intercooler/turbo pipework. Also check, where safe to do so, that power is held further up the rev range. Failure of consistent boost northwards of 5k could indicate a potential DV issue, or that the diaphragm has split. Fitment of the revised newer unit is recommended anyway. That test will also check turbo operation, as well as seeing that the MAF is working as intended.

Also a list of common issues on Stu's Octavia site:

If it's got Cruise control make sure it works.

The buttons get a bit temperamental after a while. Easily fixed thought.

Well, thanks for all the help, but I just took my current Octy to the local (trusted) garage to check a problem withrumbly starting and it seems the turbo is leaking, the vacuum pipes are leaking, and 2 of the glow plugs need replacing. Expensive

So this project is on hold. Unless I can find a garage that will accept it in part-ex without checking under the bonnet. Can't say as I want to spend £1500+ on fixing this car...

feckety feck

Edit: FYI it was this one:
