Is it time for a new clutch or box

Featured Replies

I had the DMF replaced 130,000 miles ago to the single system, now done 170,000, a few weeks ago the clutch master cylinder was replaced as it would not go into gear, since then the gear selection has been a bit notchy, and when stone cold and reversing out of my drive its hard to get it back out of revers the 1st time after that its no problem

When changing gear it sometimes feels like it does not want to go into the next gear like slight resistance but goes in after a split second.

I have had the master cylinder re bled, is there a slave cylinder next to the box????

So is it a new clutch or box????

Last point first - with a hydraulic clutch, there is always a slave cylinder at the gearbox.

Next bleeding - does the pedal feel spongy, and possibly long-traveled to the point where you've got clutch drag with the pedal on the floor? If not, then I don't think bleeding the clutch circuit will help.

Finally, onto selection. The problem only started occuring when the new master cylinder was installed yes? If so, then I'd suspect that the linkage may need adjusted, and since I think the garage who changed the master cylinder deranged the linkage, I'd expect them to bear the cost of readjusting it.

I would suggest changing the gear oil if it's not been done in the last 50k miles, but that's not going to come on suddenly, so while it might help, it's probably not the actual issue.

Clutch pedal feels normal, starts to bight about 1 to 1 and a half inches from the floor.

Had the box oil changed at last service last week

Its a possibility now that I know about the slave cylinder that it could be on the way out how easy are they to change, something like the slave cylinder loosing some of the pressure from the master cylinder when the clutch is pressed down

The symptoms are similar to when the master cylinder is on the way out,a slight resistance, when selecting gear, and a feel like 2 cogs that don't quite match then suddenly go in, when mine did go it was very crunchy and hard to select gears, so had to more or less force it into gear, just wondering if by doing that the linkage could have been damaged in any way
