Steering wheel shaking when braking on MWay..

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am pretty sure i need new brake pads as the ones i currently have are getting pretty old...

However, I am a tad worried i might be suffering from warped discs.

Is there a simple check i can do to check whether the discs are warped or is it a garage inspection??

Thanks

Don

Yes to both questions.

For what cost is involved to replace Discs & Pads, and fit yourself (straight forward job), it's an easy fix.

E-Bay around £78 including postage for brand name 'Mintex', (discs &pads.)

The simple check is to see if your steering wheel shakes when you brake...if it does your discs are warped...the specialist way is by attaching a dial indicator.

Many thanks for the responses...

Looks like i'll have to budget for them next month!

I have 312mm setup up front. I assume i can use any 312mm setup past 2003???

I.e - Touran setup for instance?

A dial guage is the only reliable way of measuring for disc warp or run-out. Steering shake under braking can also be caused by worn lower ball joints, worn track-rod ends, or worn front tyres.

Console bushes also cause this.

I'd say a bug NO to any 312s after 03. Stud pattern on newer cars is 5x112 yours is 5x100. Hope you get this sorted because I know how stressful things like this are. They make me hate my car. Best of luck.

My steering wheel shakes during braking too - it used to do it at any speed and got much worse when the brakes got hot (going over Snake pass sheff-manc for example!) - I changed my discs and pads and it solved the low speed shakes but i've kept the shakes above 60mph. Turns out my inner tie rods (between TRE's and the steering rack) are worn. Gonna change them today if i can get them off, and hopefully this will solve it all.

Just be aware its not only the discs that can cause steering shake, so get it checked over before spending pennies
