Get the horn

Featured Replies

The horn in my Skoda sounds like a parp from a kiddie's squeeky toy, has anyone fitted a Stebel or something similar ?

I am just in the process of fitting a Stebel Magnum 80 Low Tone in addition to the original which as been described as the sound you get when you step on a small dog's tail. I will review on completion.

Think the RS has a proper horn? Could do a straight swap with that part I guess?

Yeah the VRS horn is pretty decent. I don't think you'd get any better from an OEM horn to be fair.

Fitted the Stebel and one to SWMBO's. An excellent sound, it has 'presence' now :giggle:

I think the vRS horn is useless :(

How often do people use their horns? I rarely do but would like to wire up a Stebel and have a separate button for it. Would it be easy to do?

The vRS horn is really good so I will not change it.

However I have fitted £20 Stiebel horns to two of my two Honda's and found them very good, BUT make sure they are fitted well away from water splash.

You may have to uprate the fuse, so make sure the wiring can take it.

Tony

I wired direct from the battery. 10 amp fuse as close to the battery as possible and I fed the relay coil off the back of the existing horn so I now have a 'harmonised' twin tone system. The Stebel is about 6 amps so you will need 0.75mm cable minimum (this rated to take 6 amps as a constant flow so will have no problem with intermittent horn use. 1mm would be better). You would probably be ok with a straight swap for your existing horn but would need to change the connector from the VAG type to 2 female spades.

I think the vRS horn is useless :(

Really? :o

I'm genuinely surprised, might record mine later to see if it's the same as yours.

Really? :o

Over the past 4 years i have only had Audis, and the horn just doesnt compare...

I can deal with it for the amount of use it will get though!

Having had the new Fabia II now for about 5 weeks I agree with those comments regarding the poor headlights and horn, I have now overcome the horn problem by fitting a fanfare set of high/low Bosch EC9's purchased from eBay which were just under a tenner including P&P, although not as good as the ones fitted to my Superb (which are Superb ;))they are so much better than the single originally fitted, the job took about 45 mins, I have included both the link to the eBay seller I purchased from who was very good also one for youtube which gives good info for those a little unsure where to locate the horn or how to fit the replacements. Hope this helps

Mines fine but I would like some of these.

Been posted already about 50 times!!!!!

Hi Stan, thanks for that. My set of EC9s just turned up, though without any loom or instructions.

So, I have the stuff... could you explain the wiring very quickly please? Is the horn circuit polarity sensitive? Thanks!

Hi James, The wiring was very easy this is what I did. Wire first horn using spade push on connectors and heat shrinks to protect and insulate, then link to second horn allowing just a little extra cable for adjustment of the horns once in position also the connectors on this horn will require two cables to allow connect to the supply (see video attached and don’t forget to put heat shrinks on prior to connectors or you wont get them on) I used correct connecting pins to connect to the original supply block again you can see these being used briefly on the video, check alls working well prior to reassembly which is as easy as gaining access. Let me know how you get on and what you think of the horns. Good luck

Stan, does the seller you propose send through just the horns? or the cables too?

Oh and also is the horn louder or it is just a fuller sound due to the double horn?

I saw you other comparison vid but I couldn't tell if it was louder or not.

Hi, you will need to make up your own cables which is straight forward using spade connectors and about 1mtr of cable.

With regards the sound of the horns prior to fitting the twin E9's I passed my brother who drives a lorry and gave him a blast on the horn later he said he heard nothing which really concerned me as should the horn have been required in an emergency and not be heard it may well lead to an accident that’s why I upgraded, once I had added the extra horn he said it came through loud and clear.

Although as previously mentioned it’s not to the standard of the Superb’s horns but I feel comfortable that for safety’s sake I can now be heard if I need to be.

Next on the list is to change the head/dipped bulbs

Installed them too the other day - good upgrade and cheap too - richer sound, the car doesn't sound like a toy anymore :giggle:

Could you not just go to a vw breakers yard, and take one out of the mk1 fabia/ Octavia/ anything with a two tone horn?

I noticed the other day that the Seat Leon also had a dinky horn!

I guess you could but I couldn't be bothered looking :( also not all Fabias and Octavias got two tone from what I know. Anyway it wasn't an expensive buy and installation is simple so no extra costs.
