Providing power to TomTom BT GPS receiver

Featured Replies

Still getting to grips with all this in-car satnav stuff  I notice in the box with my receiver, there's a wire that I presume is to provide power to the receiver, if needed? At one end is a connector to plug into the back of the receiver and at the other it looks to be an RJ11 plug, like those used with phones/modems

Just wondering what I can do with this? Where is it supposed to plug into? Has anyone else provided a power supply to their TomTom GPS receiver? Have you used this lead?

Thanks, Steve.

You don't need the wire to run the satnav system.

You'll need to buy an in-car charging lead if you can't recharge the receiver from the mains every time. I've got a Seido PDA mount which not only runs the PDA but also has a TomTom BT charger lead output on it; without one of these, you'll need a seperate charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter

(try http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk).

The receiver runs for about 5 hours before it needs charging, and the docs say you shouldn't leave it permanently on charge. And anyway having to wire up a wireless receiver rather defeats the object of having it use Bluetooth.

Thanks, just wanted to know what my options were regarding power to it, if I need it. I'm getting a Brodit passive mount for my iPaq and can be quite tidy with the power lead should I need to recharge that. Wanted to avoid using a cig lighter adaptor for the GPS receiver if I could. Obviously as it sits on the dash it's further away from the socket and it'll look messy with a wire trailing down off the dash.

I do wonder what this lead does too....

If you've got Tom Tom's own cradle, the RJ type connector plugs into it, to provide power to the GPS. I have all kinds of problems getting my receiver to charge in the car, but that's how it's meant to work.

It normally carries 5v from the cradle, so don't cut the plug off and stick it on a 12v supply!
