This is the new DC100 concept which will form the basis for the new LR Defender. To be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (13th September)

Looks kinda "Yeti-ish" :giggle:

Easy to repair - Doubtful

Simple - Doubtful

No fancy electronic gizmo's to go crazy - doubtful

I can't say I see it being a roaring success with the farmers and real users of the defenders

Having read some of the posts on some Landy forums,

Not a lot of love being shown, and some are saying that the used value of real Deependers will raise.

Particularly the 2010 ones onwards as they were reclassified as commercials with cheaper VED by Land Rover altering the payload.

Before that the passenger carrying varients attracted the top rate of Road Tax like a Range Rover! :o

(despite being slow and having a transit engine)

What makes you say that?

Surely Land Rover must know the audience they are targetting with the Defender, and therefore design it accordingly.

Without seeing more pictures, i can't say much, but details like the chunky plastic door handles would certainly imply its not designed for the Discovery/Range Rover crowd.

Alloys and huge brakes... have you seen what an old school defender gets up to in a working life?

To be fair, its a concept. They not going to impress the world with tiny steel wheels, and huge tractor tyres.

Having a brief look online, i can't find any pictures of the interior. That will be the best place to decide if this is a proper working vehicle, or if they are trying to move the defender to a different market.

That depends on who they are trying to impress.

This concept seems to be aimed at the range rover sport brigade from what I can see of it so far.

I do, however, agree that the interior and what's underpinning the production version will be more of a hint.

It's a concept to woo the motor trade, press, consumers et al - they'll drop the alloys etc before final retail version.

Inevitably the final version may look nothing like the concept.

some are saying that the used value of real Deependers will raise.

The price of a Defender is already through the roof though....i'm not sure it would be realistic or attainable if they went much higher...I had to settle for a slightly beat up Discovery.

I don't like the look of the new one either - by all means change some of the underlying mechanicals if needed, but the original had a certain rugged charm that this one lacks completely.

I know it's a concept and these certainly won't make it into production but... Low profile tyres on a Defender, really?! I have to agree with most on here and say that it (to me) goes against everything that a Defender stands for. You shouldn't care if you dent or scratch a defender, because that's the type of car it is. To me, this looks like the type of car a woman would buy to feel "big" on the road. Which means it obviously falls into the cosmetic 4x4 category, not the working 4x4 category!

I know it's only a concept etc, but to me they may as well have made it rear wheel drive with slick tyres; it's completely unfit for purpose IMO!

Wonder how many will still be working after 10 or 20 years as with the current model.

I dont think they'll cope with farm life.

The tyres look really unusual. :wonder:

kinda looks like a future/concept jeep wrangler

I doubt the farmers would buy anything like that! They like the fact that they are durable and able to off road properly. I see loads of them around here - some much older than me! :)

LR already have so many Premium cars they would be mental to try and bling up the Defender.

They need to keep it as simple as possible but improve the on road performance a bit. I did 400 ish miles the other month all on road and it was terrible, if they can keep the off road ability but improve it on road they would appeal to a much broader market than farmers.

How about a twin cab pick up to rival the Navara, L200 etc? I know they already do one but on road manners and prices just don't compete.

Why are they so expensive anyway? There isn't much to them and development costs should have been clawed back by now! :D

I thought the whole point (and a lot of the appeal) of a defender was that it was designed to do teh job first and style second (if at all).

No objection to redesigning is on the same principles but this looks like it's made to sell to plonkers in London just like the Disco, Evoque, Freelander etc etc
