Variable servicing

Featured Replies

Hi

Bit confessed...got my car back from a service (am on variable servicing) and did the thing to see how many miles till the next service. To my sock it stated only 9600 until the next service...I got about 13k the last time?

My question is...is this Normal and what should I expect in terms of distance?

Wanted some more info before I approached the dealer.

The car is a 2007 pd vrs with 105k on the clock

Thanks

No it's not normal if you paid for a longlife service.

Either the dealer was lazy and reset from the dash, or they deliberately set to fixed intervals hoping you wouldnt notice.

Thanks

Please also excuse the bad typing

I will challenge them tomorrow...progress are usually pretty good...I will give them the benefit of the doubt

Thanks again and more comments are welcome

This has happened to me before however the dealer came clean when I took it in for the service and said it had been reset to fixed servicing by accident on the previous service so they didn't do the service (said it didn't need it) and reset the computer back to variable.

I have seen a few similar posts on here as well so this actually seems more common than you'd expect.

hi

only just got my vrs and was told i was on variable servicing . how do i check

I think the only way to tell is to plug it into the computer at the dealers...

You could try switching the ignition on, not the full turn to start, a click before. Then hold down the reset mileage button for about 3 seconds. The display will then change and you will get a spanner icon and a mileage displayed. You could assume if it is more than 10k then you are on variable servicing?

If this is not conclusive go back to the main dealer and ask...it takes them only seconds to tell you

Anyone with vagcom/VCDS can check.

My car is now 14 or 15 months old with 16450 miles on the clock. The service indicator tells me that it is due for a service in 500 miles. I think I have got so many miles before the first service as most of its runs are over 30 minutes long allowing it to get thoroughly warmed up. I also drive the car gently around town.

Is this a record for a first service?

If you have Maxidot you can select "vehicle status". Press and hold the up button you use for computer functions, then move down until highlighted. Press the button on the bottom of the stalk, and if on variable service it will tell you the miles and days to the service. If it is something like 18000+ miles or 700+ days then it is variable (if the car has just been serviced or is new).

Note though that it takes 300miles or so for the car to calculate the numbers, since it is based on fuel usage/driving style.

Also, resist the temptation of resetting the interval via maxi-dot as that will reset it only to fixed servicing anyway.

If you don't have maxidot, then as the other reply says you can use the button on the dash.

If the car is brand new it should automatically come from the factory set up as variable, unless the dealer has messed with it!

Not bad, but my services so far were 1st at 20000, 2nd at 40000 and the next one stated as due around 63000 (I think diesel prices have made me drive a bit more gently recently) :-)
