Fuel computer problem

Featured Replies

 My fuel computer is on the blink . Literaly! in continuous mode even driving steadily at a constant speed it is shooting from 15 to 250 MPG and all points between every few seconds . anybody had this ? I suspect some water/ice has got into a sensor, any ideas .

The car is loosening up nicely now at 1500 miles , would give my old Impreza Turbo a good run for it's money in a straight line , astonishing zip

There are two fuel consumption displays - current and average. The current consumption display seems to behave as you describe. I don't know for sure but I guess it may be less erratic when driving at a fairly constant speed on a motorway. The average fuel consumption display is more use and shows the average consumption since the memory was last erased. Take a look at the handbook.

I have to agree, i am sometimes shocked by the performance of the car

er....yes..... I know that , but mine shoots from 0 -20-50-100-0-60-180 while cruising at a steady speed it definately didnt do that last week :thumbdwn:

  • 1 month later...

For a while have noticed that the ave mpg displayed is significantly higher than with actual mpg when calculated between between fill-ups. The variance is about 8mpg, on average displaying over 58mpg. This is over a period of a month.

On some motorway journeys I can get up to 75mpg showing on the current display. Even at a steady 56mph this seemed to good to be true

I have changed the units from mpg (UK) to mpg (US) > Set-up > units menu, To-date this seems to give a more realistic reading. Will check actual v computer average later this week and if it is more in line with reality I am inclined to leave it.

Perhaps having the Maxi Dot display has had some affect!!!!

All told a full tank of fuel (11 UK gals) gives approx range 550 miles which is not too bad. About 3-4mpg better than old 2002 Bora 100TDI

Has anyone else noticed such a variance?

Have you tried setting the car on cruise, and seeing how the readout behaves then?

Even the slightest of pressures of the right foot can make the instant consumption figure jump around.

They aren't that fast.

I think there may be something wrong with your mpg computer reading mate, mine changes a lot but nothing like what you

Yes, over some 12,00 miles I am averaging between 54 & 56 MPG - calculated on tank fill up to fill up yet the comulative MPG computer tells me that I am averaging over 60 MPG! I regularly achieve over 60 MPG at the end of a long(ish) run - 35 miles+.

I put a post in on the subject a few months ago; it appears to be a common problem.

Does anyone know how these things actually calculate the values. Is the error the result of an incorrect factor being applied to change from metric to imperial units.

regards
