Jerkiness at low speed when engine is cold

This is referring to an Octava VRS PD170.

This happens when you first set off and need to drive feathering the throttle in 1st or 2nd. It feels like the engine is about to stall and the car jerks quite badly. The car hasnt actually stalled, but the way it jerks is really annoying and a little embarrasing as you look like a right boob in the supermarket car park.

Any ideas?
