Engine oil - fill on hot or cold engine?

Featured Replies

I used to check my oil in the morning when the engine was cold and the level showed ok (in the middle)..

now the oil level is at the minimum but when I read the manual it says the oil check shuld ONLY be done when the engine is hot? and when I do that the oil-level show max..

Have driven about 2400km with my new fabia without oil-fill, and I am not sure if its need oil yet..

cold engine - oil need to be refilled.

hot engine - Oil shuld NOT be refilled..

forget it..

Checket now again on cold engine, level show ok again. Guess the car didnt stand flat when I checked last time..

but is it ok to check oil-level on cold engine? a day after u drive..

Hi Xcyber,

Normally the oil level is higher when the engine is cold after an overnight stand for example. When the engine oil is checked hot (after the engine has been standing for a few minutes) the oil level should be lower than the cold reading. I wonder if you are not quite getting the car standing on level ground for it's checks. Just a small tilt angle makes a huge difference and has led many people to overfill the oil by quite some bit.

As long as you are on the level and you have wiped the dipstick , then your oil is fine do it when warm, over fill can damage an engine, carry a 1 liter bottle with you in boot  edit also Don't check fluids, such as oil, right after turning off the engine. Allow some time to pass in order to allow the oil that has run into the engine to drain back into the reservoir. Otherwise, you may see a reading that it is low, when in fact it is not, with the result that you will overfill.

Have always followed this pattern in my driving career, make sure the car was fully warmed up or after a drive ie normal operating temp. Park car on level ground(any angle at all can throw off the reading) and wait around 5 - 10 mins then wipe dipstick and re insert and you should have your correct oil reading.

Hope this helps.

ive always checked my oil from a cold engine, but everyone has there own way.

for the past 50 years,I have checked the engine oil level, after the car has been standing overnight, and never had problems.

When i check the manual some of the engines are supposed to be checked when cool an dsome when warm, how come?

Welcome superdea

Always checked mine when cold as its higher than when warm... Its spot on 'A' when cold and under the level 'A' when warm so all is good according to the manual etc
