Low Coolant Level

Featured Replies

I've been off forum for some time, so hello all.

Twice in the last 6 months, my Greenline (type 1 on an 09 plate) has alarmed on start up from cold, that the coolant is low.

I have topped up with de-ionised water and it's fine.

It happened again (for the 2nd time) today.

Has anyone else had this with theirs? Should I be worried?

There is no obvious signs of leakage, but given the time between occurences and the amount lost (100-200ml?) I dont know if Id notice it on the drive (assuming it got that far).

I am loathe to book it in to the local dealer for an inspection (busy/cost etc), but may have to go that way.

Any thoughts?

200ml in six months is not excessive, especially if you have aircon. it's certainly not a major leak.

Personally, i'd top up with correct mix of coolant, not just water.

Yeah, but this isn't a steady thing, it's going from normal to below min in one go and triggering the alarm on start up. Also, I don't have (but will have) coolant lying around, just the water. I didn't want to risk driving it around looking for coolant while alarming and then after the first top up the problem seemed to go away...

The apparent sudden loss could be an air blockage suddenly going.

Best to take it in then and have it checked for leaks and pressure tested if there are no apparent ones.

Cheers

Steve

Cheers Steve - it's a way off a service (not long had one) so for peace of mind I'll get it checked.

My Nov 2010 Superb Estate was due for it's first service early Nov. so I booked in with Sparshatts at Botley from whom I bought the vehicle. Some time ago the water warning light came on at start-up time, and then went off after a while. ( The mileage then circa 3000 miles.) As this kept happening I checked the coolant reservoir and found the level to be below the norm, so I filled it back up which solved the problem for a while. At the service time, mileage 3442 or thereabouts, I told the garage re the coolant loss and would they solve it under warranty. When handing the car back they said there is a leak in a short pipe near the rad, couldn't find it on the parts computer, had checked with other Superbs to find they also have that pipe, would check with Skoda and order the part. Apparently the first one to arrive was the wrong one but booked me in for the replacement to be fitted, which duly took place. A few days later, the water warning light came on again after only a few miles had been done, so whatever is the cause of the loss of coolant remains and replacement of the small pipe is not the cure. When doing the warranty " repair " I was not issued with any docmentation of what was done or when etc, which surprises me. There were black boot marks on the side of the driver's seat and it would seem no plastic seat protection was used on the service or the later repair time, which I also find surprising. When originally handing the car back from it's service I was given 2 sheets of paper, not dated nor who had prepared them and it was not till later at home did I notice one item which had been found unsatisfactory, ie the brake fluid, re which nothing had been said to me on hand back of the car. When I went back for the first attempt of rectifying the water loss, I asked what the failure re the brake system was, first comment is I don't know.... so will you please find out. Answer came back, we really don't know but assume the brake fluid level was low. So that was not worth a mention to me. So the car has to go back for the 3rd time to find and cure the coolant leak. Has any other Superb diesel experienced coolant loss and if so, what was the cause. Thanks Tony R.

I had coolant warning on few times. I went to dealership, and they actually showed me that level is normal (but closer to minimum), but when engine starts it drops on minimum. Then they opened lid and hissing sound of vacuum could be heard. He sipped a little bit of coolant, and I never had problem again.

But since your problem repeats, coolant has to go somewhere :(

Thank you, will let you know the eventual outcome, so what with the brake level being suspect ( possibly that was? ) and the water definitely going somewhere, we ain't doing too well this time, the Skoda Octavia I had before for 7 years gave no trouble at all, bonnet never needed lifting, no warning lights ever came on and nothing under it ever needed attention, apart from the washer bottle topping up. Strange though, despite the loss of coolant, the temperature never goes over the halfway mark.

Although I have not done much mileage since my previous post, I am keeping my fingers crossed as after the initial emptying of the water reservoir, it has stayed up where it should be, so maybe the problem has been cured. It would appear the garage did not do a test run after their repairs and an air blockage resulted.
