2011 vRS TSI tyre speed & load ratings

Featured Replies

My 2011 vRS TSI came with 92Y tyres, does anyone else have anything different on theirs?

Does anyone know the manufacturers minimum load/speed rating for a 2011 vRS TSI? My assumption is that it is 92Y but just wondered.

Just looking at winter tyres and the Y speed rating is difficult to find.

I'm pretty sure you can't get winter tyres in anything better than an H speed rating. Taken from the Kleber website "For winter tyres, the speed capacity may legally be less than that of the tyres originally fitted, but in this case the speed of travel must be adapted to this lower limit. A label reminding the driver of this reduced limit must be affixed inside the vehicle, in a clearly visible position." If your car has maxidot you can set an option for winter tyres that gives you a speed warning.

As long as you don't exceed the speed rating of whatever tyre you fit I don't think there will be a problem. Car manufacturers must order all their tyres at the higher speed ratings so they can be fitted to a wider range of cars, makes their stock control much easier. Anyway, in winter, or any other time for that matter, are you really going to be travelling at 186mph? I'd say H (130mph), or even T (118mph), rated tyres would be OK, and that load rating is more important.

Just found the Skoda TUV document for wheels and tyres. For the Octavia II fitted with the CCZA engine (ie the TSI engine from the vRS) the following tyres are listed;

205/55 R16 91H M+S

205/50 R17 93H M+S

225/45 R17 91W

225/40 R18 92Y

Hope this helps

My Octavia vRS Winter tyres are V rated

I use vredestein wintrac extreme in 225/40/18 92y m + s rated with mountain symbol.

It was a more expensive route one that means insurance company does not need a call for different wheels even steels.

Excellent last year and car looks the same summer and winter

When I contacted Skoda UK, 18" wheels were not on the recommended list for winter tyres. However, this is probably because if you use snow chains they have to be the super thin ones (or the ones that don't go round the back of the tyre at all), and they only recommend wheel/tyres that can take a 'standard' snow chain.

They did still recommend the Y or V rating though, but I think that is just to cover themselves since on Maxidot you have the winter wheel speed setting to warn you, so seems a bit silly as even in summer 130Mph limit should be fine! I was going to go for 91H on 16" alloys, unless I could see a reasonable priced V/W/Y or Z. For winter tyres many that are V are the extra load versions.

I think you need the 92 or above on 18" but only 91 on 17" and below. Not sure why this is the case, unless they assume that 18"=vRS=heavier , 17"=non vRS=Lighter

But there is some complex maths for load rating that use tyre profile, tyre width and car weight to calculate it.

do you have a copy you can send me please?

Assuming you paid for an optional spare wheel, if you look at the size it will be 205/55 R16 91 (V or W). As long as you get a tyre with a minimum of a 91 load rating as per the spare you will be fine.

As for the speed rating, for snow tyres they are usually lower than summer tyres, I'm running a H rated tyre (130mph max).

So why do smaller wheels carry a lower tyre load rating then on the same car?

I was puzzled by this too, all previous cars I had were 91. I know there is some complex formula, and maybe the Octavia is on the edge of a rating so the larger wheels and numerical rounding nudge it over. However, I suspect it may be more to do with Skoda getting a discount from the tyre manufacturers by using a less common load rating that they may have surplus stock for.

As far as I'm aware the minimum load rating for this car is 91 which the 16 tyre size matches exactly. In the 18 inch tyre size 225/40 the only choice of load rating is 88 or 92(XL), so the 92 load rating is fitted as the 88 rating is too low.

Oh yes, I see what you mean. On the ATS site the vRS tyres only come in V/W/Y/Z and all are 88/92 or just 92, whereas the other standard Skoda tyre sizes are available in 91.

This also means that there is no need for the 92 or above with winter tyres on 16" rims, again unless the V is only available as a 92/94 (or go for H - 130mph), and does explain why others run 94 on 18" winter tyres as that will be the only load rating probably for the V speed.

Thank you for the clarity.
