glow plug flash/engine workshop message?

Featured Replies

can anyone advise me on the following fault please. (2005 Superb 2.0Tdi)

On a recent long journey from Merseyside to Cornwall the "Engine Workshop" message appeared and the glow plug light flashed constantly after about 90 miles of very steady motorway driving (65-70 mph in sixth gear 2000rpm) stopped at the next services for twenty minutes then continued on our way. The warning light cleared after about five minutes but then came on again after another 40-50 miles. It followed the same pattern for the whole 300 mile journey, each time I stopped for a while it would clear shortly after continuing on.

then spent the week driving around Cornwall on country lanes/A roads etc and covered 250 miles without the fault occuring.

Start the homeward journey and after 50 steady motorway miles at fairly low revs the same thing happened on the journey home.

Any thoughts on what the fault is as it seems to be related to the style of driving the car is doing, The fault didnt seem to affect the car or the way it drove in any way, In fact it was fully loaded and returned over 53MPG on the way home.

A friend in work has tried his Sykes code reader but that hasnt showed anything?

Thanks

Steve

I had this on mine, the fault code reader showed up with over boost, got it cleared and it hasn't don it again in 2 thousand miles, it came on when joining the motorway. Thread searches talked about sticking turbo vanes but never got a clear answer.

When the warning is active, do your brake lights work? If you have cruise control, is it working?

is the dpf fluid due to be replenished?

thanks for the replies, As far as I know everthing worked fine including the cruise control which was on for much of the journey, Not sure about the brake lights but didnt have anyone run into the back of me LOL!

As for the DPF fluid, sorry but what is DPF Im not aware of this, what is it and how can I check it?

thanks

Steve

DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter. There is a reservoir of it fitted to the 2.0 TDi that needs topping up every now and then.

When this happened on my car (V6 TDi) on holiday in Italy, it turned out to be a faulty fuel sensor in the tank, though the fuel gauge and mileage remaining on the display still seemed to work OK.

dude sounds like dpf fluid ive had mine done its about £35 a litre and if your tank is empty it holds about 4 litres it cost me about £250 it needs topping up every 70/80000miles mate

I always wondered about the "special fluid" on VW TDIs with early DPF.

Is it not just the AdBlue that you can get on most HGV services as lorries use it to cut emissions?

If yes, then 40p/litre is typical price... I guess it'd be a ripoff record (8650% overcharge) even for VW Group.
