Doubts when viewing a VRS

Hi all

Im viewing a VRs next week and have a couple of doubts as to what I should be looking out for.

My problems lie with cambelt changing and dual mass flywheel.

I really dont know how often the cambelt should need changing, and what noises the dual mass makes if its gone etc.

The one im viewing has done 73k with full service history so it shouldnt be too big an issue.

I may be wrong and I'm sure others will correct if I am... But- I uderstand the Cambelt is every five years or 40k which ever comes first.

It's now 40k or 4 years, for cambelt. Make sure the water pump was done too at the same time.

You are correct as far as i`m aware. I`v checked with Unit 18 because mine is due soon.

Anything on the dual mass at all, like noise on start up etc?

I'm pretty sure it's still 80k

its every 60K or four years which ever comes sooner

as far as knackered DMF, look for vibration under acceleration and rattles at idle esp when the clutch is engaged

Lots of confusion, see lol 80k, 60k and 40k answers. Mine's been done based on 60k / 4 years so far...

80k was the original (and what my book says) 60 was the revised, and not a clue where 40 comes from lol

40 seems to be what VW recommend for some of the Polos I think. (At least, I think my GTi is every 40k - but they had issues with the rollers failing or something.) So might be carried over from there?

Yes it's 40k Or 4 on the Polo.

Came from failure on the old chassis where the plastic shell would sheer off and screw the engine. Nearly happened to mine.

I used 40k or 4 as a precaution on any VAG now.

Hmmm mixed reviews, seeing as the one im viewing is on 73k and had it changed at 37k, I think ill say its due soon and work from there.

I would use a general rule for all cars.

first cambelt change should be 7yrs or 60k whichever it sonner, after that i would change them every 4yrs regardless of milage.

I would do it that way for a vauxhall, a ford, a vw or toyota, it's common sense really

if the one your viewing was changed at 37k thats a good sign, but if it's over 4yrs ago i would factor in another cambelt change in the next 12months if your considering buying it

My understanding is that is WAS 60k/4 years but it's NOW 75k/4 years. Definitely NOT 5 or 7 years as others have suggested.

Mine's just been done at 29k owing to the time interval.

That's definitely due a change. It's not worth the risk, you have no idea how it's been driven the last 40k odd.

Get it changed straight away, and haggle in a discount so you're not straight out of pocket.

Well I plan on driving around Europe anyway next year so it will definately be getting changed.

Tbh its everything I would do to one bar engine mods which is a gd thing.
