Max speed for gears

Featured Replies

I'll be getting my 2.0 TD pdi soon and was wondering if someone would tell me the max speeds for the 2nd 3rd and 4th gears - or the mph/1000rpm would do. Thanks.

This information is not available in any of the glovebox data.

I could work it out for you given a quiet enough road although i'd do it at 2000rpm and hope that the tacho is accurate.

Put it this way, it doesnt like sixty in second! Going to overtake and block changed from 6th to 2nd, instead of 4th. Luckily realised and dipped clutch as revs hit 5,000. Seems to be no damage done.

Doh..... why were you going for 4th? 5th at 60 would've been well into peak torque and given you longer in gear (and that's not a criticism)

In old octy (110bhp) would have used 4th, Still getting used to which gears to use i s'pose, was actually doing just under 60 at time, still didnt like it though!

The wife tried to change down under brakeing from 6 to 5 but got 3rd instead luckely relised and dipped the clutch before to many rev's

I still find switching down gears useful, sure you may have more torque but in my remapped furby I have 195 hp to play around with at 3.5k rpm :D

tried a little experiment last night on my private test track...

from 60-100 in 4th was 13.7 seconds

in 5th is was 15.2 seconds

60-90 would favour 4th even more as it was starting to run out od steam around the ton. So, You were right to change to 4th for best pull at 60.

As for the max speeds. I'll do a proper simulation but at 4500rpm the max speeds for each gear are APPROX...

1st - 27

2nd - 47

3rd - 74

4th - 103

5th - 128

6th - 151

Thanks Studbuckle for the info.

Just for interest sake, if you were overtaking with a starting speed of 50mph would you do it in 3rd or 4th? i.e. start in 3rd then change to 4th at about 70mph or do the whole thing in 4th?

4th will do the job nicely, I tend to use 3rd at about 40ish for overtaking.

ditto. 3rd would give you the best acceleration but you'd be wanting to change up to 4th at 60 which would come pretty quickly. Depends how long you're going to be in the danger zone. There's a compromise between fast acceleration and having to change gears mid overtake. The latter should be avoided wherever possible

Or you could buy a car with the DSG gearbox which would look after the gears for you............until it exploded mid-overtake
